Peckforton Castle is midway between Chester and Crewe, surrounded by 36,000 acres of sprawling Cheshire countryside.
In 1952, the Castle was recognised by English Heritage when it was granted Grade I-listed status. It has been the backdrop for scenes in "Robin Hood", "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", and "Doctor Who".
The Wine Cellar is described by The Daily Telegraph as an "extraordinary" place for drinks. This room features a bar, low barrel vault ceiling, and alcoves built into the castle wall.***
Less than five minutes' drive from the hotel are the Medieval ruins of Beeston Castle. On a clear day, you can see from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains. The English Heritage Site delves into 4,000 years of history. It has a replica Bronze Age roundhouse and 40 acres of woodland.
Lonely Planet has dubbed Chester "one of Britain's prettiest town centres". This is thanks to its tidy collection of black-and-white timber-framed buildings. The city is 30 minutes' drive away.

Our third visit to this atmospheric hotel in the woods. Unique experience and lovely food.
Prices in the restaurant have gone up since previous visits, so there was a hefty supplement for our meal + service charge which was automatically added to the bill.
Cellar bar well worth checking out & price of drinks reasonable.
Other Comments
Hotel is up a hill in the middle of the woods, so unless you are a serious walker, need to take the car to see any local sights.
Some bedrooms are much larger than others, so pot luck where you end up, but still very clean and comfortable.

Peckforton Castle is a lovely castle and in a great location, very close to Beeston Castle and Chester.
Other Comments
Peckforton Castle could be a wonderful place to stay, but several things made us feel that it is being allowed to run down: specifically: broken heater control (so radiator blazed too hot all night), broken tap, only one tub chair in double bedroom. Also there were stains on one of the pillow cases and a dirty mark on the bottom sheet.
We also felt that the management is skimping on guest amenities, which is especially bad when you've chosen to stay in a castle and are hoping for matching luxury. We ate in the Brasserie, both had fish and chips and the portions were so small they left us hungry. There was not much choice on the menu. Also I mentioned our disappointment about this after dinner, and about other issues the following morning and no one properly apologised or addressed our concerns. Also meagre coffee sachets in the room and no tea or other drinks. One pack of 2 biscuits. It's a shame they are skimping on these details and on customer care, as otherwise (for the castle and setting) we'd have loved to go back.

The food choices were very limited. The room offered to us had a lot of stairs to climb.

The car park is an inconvenience especially because rain was falling and we had to carry our bags without any shelter. Parking should have been directly at the front of the castle entrance

Wait was so long for breakfast we left, socket was falling off the wall, room was so hot and could not turn off one of the radiators, chunks of plaster missing from the walls, cobwebs and dust all over, stated to phone 0 for reception but no phone, Tv casing was falling off. Advised reception of all these things but they did not care

Great food. Wonderful ambiance. Just know that many of the rooms have no elevator access so you must ask for a room near an elevator. Also know that you can drop off your bags at reception BUT the car park is outside the castle walls

Peckforton Castle Is absolutely beautiful and in a stunning location. The evening meals, in both the Brasserie and 1851 restaurants, were amazing, however the breakfast was lacking by comparison, with a surcharge added in for breakfast options that most hotels include as standard (such as £6 extra for smoked salmon, scrambled eggs). One thing to be aware of is that, being a Grade 1 listed building, there are no lifts to the upper bedroom floors. If you end up in the top of the tallest tower it’s 101 steps, the last 30 of which are a spiral staircase, although the views are amazing. The bedrooms are well appointed and the bed was very comfortable. The communal rooms are lovely and there’s lots of snug seating areas. Overall one of the nicest places I have ever stayed, just let down by the breakfasts.
Other Comments
Overall very impressed with the rooms, ambiance, staff and location. The evening meals, in both restaurants, were exceptionally good. However I did feel the breakfast was lacking in both quality and quantity (I.e. the most basic bread used for the toast). Also we were surprised to see a surcharge added for breakfast options that most hotels include as standard (such as £6 extra for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs). In fact we overheard other guests asking why there was a surcharge, so we weren’t the only ones who felt this way.

Absolutely awful room, not even sure they should be letting the room, 105 steps, the last 30 or so were stone spiral steps in a tower. There was no fire escape so the only exist on the event of a fire would be back down the spiral stone steps. Yes I know it’s a castle but surely there still has be be fire regulations met! The brassiere was dark to the extent that people were using the torches on their phones to read the menu, the cellar bar was dark, dank and uninviting

Set in beautiful countryside, PC is an impressive and unique hotel. The staff were friendly, the beds were comfy. The rooms were authentically old but with every facility, tea, coffee, iron etc and modern bathrooms. My only criticism was the room we were allocated. The shower did not work and was running cold, the safe was not working as the plug had been cut off. We did go to reception to complain about the shower but in all fairness, it was getting late for anyone to attend. I reported the faults again the following morning when checking out. Although we had a great stay the facilities on offer I personally would not rate the hotel as 4 star.
Other Comments
The staff were really attentive, the food excellent and the surrounding and setting perfect. Peckforton is a large complex with I would imagine has a few problems. Whoever cleans the rooms must realise there are problems and need to feed these problems back to management to save any complaints.

I ought this voucher so that I could meet a friend halfway , the location worked perfect and the neighbouring village was delightful. Our room was very tired and small. However did offer nice toiletries. Also we were hugely disappointed that we were put in a dining area by ourselves. We were told that we couldn’t reserve a table pre 8.30 because they were too busy. This wasn’t true and when we went into the dining room at 8.30 it was empty. They offer a nice outside lawned area to enjoy a drink but the bar is half a mile away. The barlady was very miserable on three occasions we visited the bar but the rest of them were very nice

Room name not communicated (only room number provided) so ended up in another room due to the fact that some rooms didn’t display a number (only a name) coupled with the fact that we were able to scan our card and enter any room on that floor/corridor due to the fact that none of the electric strikes were operational leaving all rooms unsecured. We had to request a physical key to secure our belongings.
We booked 2 nights separately which meant we had to be moved only to find ourselves in a room next to a midweek wedding party/disco that evening that went on untill midnight so we had to be moved again due to the noise levels.

The room was too hot and whilst it would be difficult to resolve this in a grade 1 listed building, it was uncomfortable, even with the use of the fan provided. Breakfast was billed to be a grand affair in a lovely restaurant, but to be honest, the full english was disappointing. The restaurant menu was a little underwhelming. We would not expect to find a basic fish like coley on an AA 3 rosette menu.

The service for evening meal was rubbish my starter was burnt & our friend could not eat her starter. The main course was ok but it took ages for the waiter to fetch salt & vinigar. How they did the bill was stupid instead of booking the meals to our rooms what each couple had they put it all together & it took ages sorting out when we were leaving. We did complain about the evening meal & they did give us a free round of drinks. They have changed the way breakfeast is served from self service to being served asked for orange juice came with ice in asked for some more orange juice without ice guess what came with ice. We were a little disappointed with the changes since our first visit 10 years ago. They no longer do the tour of the castle or the falconry displays and the chapel was closed for repairs. Unfortunately there was bad weather when we stayed so we had to stay indoors a lot. We would recommend a games room to accommodate this situation. The price of drinks in the wine cellar was extortionate, we would expect to pay a little more but this was above and beyond. Service for breakfast and dinner was very good and the staff were lovely, however the breakfast staff were extremely busy and this caused a delay at breakfast.. We reported that our towel rail would not heat and we were given the explanation that they were awaiting fuses. Being told this at check in would have been advisable and maybe the offer of bathrobes a good compensation.

Fantastic building, loads of traditional features & atmosphere, long corridors & lots of staircases. Room was lovely but could have been warmer En-suite had a rolltop bath but plumbing had an unpleasant smell when initially used.
Meal was lovely, All in all, great value & had a lovely break.

We were disappointed with the breakfast menu and the service at breakfast . We felt they were understaffed and couldn’t clear the tables quick enough when people left so guests were waiting a long time for a table .
We also saw one couple leave after waiting for over an hour to have their breakfast order brought to them .
I would visit again if I was in that area .

Only a choice of 4 main courses on the 1851restaurant menu.
Service charge on drinks. Bacon very overcooked at breakfast. Generally messy and untidy around the continental breakfast area. Rooms only setviced after.2 nights unless requested which is very poor for a place of this calibre. Much show in general but not much substance.

I feel that as we booked through a third party we were given one of the less desirable rooms. Our view from a small window was of the weeds growing out of the rear of the building and the gas storage tank and generator.
The bathroom shower door did not close, the water temperature was hard to adjust and the shower did not drain well so we had to keep turning it off and on.
We also had to climb over 50 steps to the room.

The castle is very impressive and our greeting at reception was pleasant and informative. Things went down hill from then on. We found our room located above to air conditioning units which were incredibly noisy. Unfortunately, we were told no other room was available, and after a sleepless night and another trip to reception we were moved for our second night to a blissfully quiet suite, which was greatly appreciated.
We did not enjoy our two meals in the Brasserie. The menu was limited and the food tasteless. There was no atmosphere in the room and the staff, although pleasant, were inefficient. Breakfast was interesting, the menu offered a full English or continental breakfast. Vegetarians had to choose the non-meat items from the full English or eat from the very paltry continental affair. Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or smashed avocado would have been nice. On the second morning by 8.15am the dining room was full, there were virtually no staff, no one to seat guests or take orders in turn, it was anarchy or a present-day version of Fawlty Towers. We have never experienced anything like it.
This establishment has so much potential, the beautiful building, the setting, and many very pleasant and able members of staff. What is lacking is a completely new, experienced and capable management team.
We did not enjoy our stay and would not return.

We are an elderly couple, in our late seventies. The room we were given was up 5 flights of step stone steps(75 in total) and no lift. We found this quite hard work.

Very warm welcome from the receptionist. Room was beautifully presented, clean and tidy. Restaurant was excellent, food was delicious and good service from the waiter / waitress. The grounds were beautiful, lawns very well manicured and overall very well kept. At night the grounds are lit up with an abundance of fairy lights which make it feel magical and looks so pretty. The room was a pleasant temperature, the bed was very comfortable. There was an abundance of hot water and the toiletries were very luxurious and smelt divine. Breakfast was ok, there was no fresh fruit left when we arrived and it took quite a while for some to appear even though I had requested some as soon as I went to the buffet. The pastries were a little dry and / or stale, so overall it could have been a little better.
Other Comments
The only disappointment was the wine cellar bar, as it was a lovely sunny day we wanted to sit outside and enjoy a few drinks before getting ready for dinner. The wine cellar is quite a way away from the outside seating area, but it wasn’t a problem really but we learnt that there is a nearer outside bar but only open when there are large functions on. I also requested a coffee from the wine cellar but was told this wasn’t an option and there was no where else to get one from which I later discovered wasn’t true! It didn’t spoil our stay but there are areas that could be made better.

The restaurant was a treat for us, we spent quite a bit there on dinner, but the quality of the food and service was worth it. I believe the Brasserie is an option if you wish to spend less than the main restaurant. We didn't eat in there but it looked like an attractive room to eat in and had a nice atmosphere.
Breakfast was fresh, hot and delicious.

I booked an overnight stay for myself and my sister in law who was celebrating her 70th birthday. There was little information regarding the layout of the castle plus no history given. The food was a bit disappointing we had the curry in the brassiere but it was tasteless. we struggled to follow directions to out room which was at the top of a lot of stairs. Also, we struggled to follow directions to out room which was at the top of a lot of stairs and I had to carry both sets of luggage. No one explained re stairs and the lift didn’t take us near our room. We felt we were left to fend for ourselves in that no help/information was forthcoming at reception, so instead of
spending time relaxing we came home. However, in fairness the staff were very thin on the ground.

Previously stayed at Peckforton Castle which was amazing. Disappointed with the dining this time. There was a wedding so it was very busy. At just before 9 o’clock we had to queue for almost an hour for breakfast and once shown to our table we had to wait a further 20 minutes for our food, which wasn’t very hot. There was no fresh fruit or yoghurt left, very few pastries and just a couple of slices of continental meats and cheese. The service charge had been added to our bill for drinks from the bar, which was quite a walk away and we had to go and collect. I returned the key card when checking out and had to ask for the deposit of £10 to be refunded to me as this was left on the bill.

The castle is stunning on the outside and the drive up to the castle is lovely. In side the hotel has bars and lounges and rooms and rooms for use in weddings. It is clean and an adventure exploring. We were not told about what bars our lounges that they have available only that we were eating in the Bistro for dinner and the restaurant for breakfast. Dinner in the Bistro was usual pub grub eg beef burger , fish and chips etc. Breakfast in the restaurant was lovely. Food was cooked to order, the cold food was usual fayre of cereal, yoghurt , not a lot of variety in the fruit, but we enjoyed what we had. Our room classic double was quite small but adequate. It was clean and we had a nice view of the lawn. We used the lift and then had to walk up for stairs. All the staff we spoke to were very pleasant , helpful and friendly.

The bath in the bathroom needed renewing or a stand alone shower in it. It would have been nice if there was a printout telling you about what bars, lounges and library were in the hotel. It would also be good if there was a walk in the wood or around the outside of the castle to do.

The WOW from outside
Other Comments
Copy of email sent to Peckforton
Good Morning
Firstly let me start on a positive , the Castle is a real WOW from the outside but unfortunately that's where our good experience of Peckforton ended .
We booked through Travelzoo and got , what we thought , was a real bargain .We had been fancying Peckforton for quite a while and it had been my birthday and our wedding Anniversary in April , so we decided to have a bit of a Road Trip - Durham , Kirby Lonsdale and then Peckforton - all on DBB for 1 night each .We had also become Grandparents in April for the first time , so this was just a chill out for us after a hectic and expensive month .
When we arrived , we had been given a room that was not suitable as i have Scoliosis in my back but that was very quickly remedied and we were changed to 105 .We were advised that both our Evening Meal and Breakfast were in the Restaurant at the side of Reception up the stairs .I thought it a bit odd but we were tired and just wanted to get to our room and settle .The Room its self was quite underwhelming and the sock that was left under the Bedside Table was definitely NOT ours .On a plus side though , the Bed was by far the best out of the 3 Hotels we had stayed in .
We got ourselves sorted and went down for Dinner .We had both already decided on the Soup , then Chicken Curry - if this was the same as the sample Menu .When we got to Reception , there was a really nice chatty young Man there and again - TWICE - i queried the Restaurant and was told that yes , it was up the Stairs .When i had originally booked , i had been a little unsure of which to go for and i assumed that i had gone for this one - with the extra Dining Credit .
We had quite a nice meal but no Chicken Curry but the service was really, really slow and we were actually there over 2 Hours ?? When the bill arrived , i was quite taken aback with the cost but was told the Dining Credit would be taken off the following day and to be honest i was also going to remove the Service Charge - as i said , really slow .With my calculations , that should have taken it down to approx £68.00 and not the £101 we finished up paying .
When we got back to our Room , i double checked my emails and found out that we had been sent to the wrong Restaurant - We should have been in the other one downstairs and we had got the Deal with £20 pp Credit .
My point is , had we have been sent to the correct Restaurant , our bill inc.3 Courses and wine would have been approx £95.00 and then with the £20 off pp £45.00 .
What started out as quite a decent deal , finished up really, really expensive and its left a very sour taste in my mouth .
The Girl at Reception did offer to get the Manager yesterday but i had hurt my back in the ridiculously small Bathroom we had and to be honest , i was so upset we just came home instead of the trip to Liverpool we had planned .
This totally ruined our few days away and the part of the Trip i really thought was going to be the best bit , was the worst and the feather that broke the Camels back ? The Dirty sock under the Bedside Table ...........REALLY ???????
Regards
Susan Thompson

No check on mobility and was given a room at the top of 100 steps, last 20 very windy. Waited over an hour for our food in the evening, lounge had used crockery on every table, not cleared away. Had to queue for 20 minutes just to get into the restaurant for breakfast . Food provision and service very poor. We felt the staff needed training.

We were upgraded to a Executive room. The problem was it had a bath with a big rust mark in it, which didn't look very nice. Also ordered 2 coffees when we arrived and waited for 45 minutes and then had to go and look to see why they hadn't arrived. The lady said she hadn't been told by reception.

Peckforton castle is a fantastic setting. We had a good room with a lovely view of the church. All staff were very polite and friendly. Just one or two niggles: non electric vehicles parked in 2 ev charging points. Reported to reception. One car still there next morning. Food in 1851 restaurant a little disappointing. Main course not as described on menu and could have been warmer. Truffle chips didn’t taste of truffle at all. We would go back but would try Brasserie.

Room was lovely, bed was comfy and the food was good
What I was not happy about was our bar bill.
Our welcome letter from Peckforton Castle mentioned that a discretionary 10% service charge would be added to our bill but we could decline this at the till if we wished. I presumed that this was applicable to the restaurant.
When we checked out, our bar bill was higher than we expected. I questioned it at the time with the reception staff and they printed off a bill for me and I noted that a bottle of wine had been added which I had forgotten about and I also noted that the drink prices were an awful lot higher than we would normally pay when we went out. I just settled the bill as there was an awfully long queue of guests standing behind me.
When we arrived home, I rechecked my bill and I noted that every time we bought a round of drinks, the bar man had added a service charge to our bill which we had not expected. We were never asked at any time if we were happy to add a discretionary service charge. To add insult to injury, we had already tipped the barman £10!! He never mentioned that we had already tipped him.
For reason, we will not be returning to Peckforton Castle as felt that we were deceived.

Brilliant location for exploring the local area. Cheshire is a stunning county. Lovely staff and good food.
Disappointed that there was no spa facility (I knew there was no swimming pool) but the website info. indicated that treatments were available. Apparently this was stopped due to Covid. However, Tranquility was still advertised on various permanent signs within the hotel and the lift !!

Stunning location and very good value- Staff excellent -Beeston Castle nearby worth a visit. Disappointed that we were not given the option to upgrade our dining experience as the Brasserie had a very limited 'pub-grub' menu, in spite of me asking at check-in. Our neighbours were given an option to upgrade for 10gbp each. We would revisit if we were able to eat in the 1851

One night DBB on a Monday (having visited RHS Bridgewater). The castle is amazing. There was a large wedding going on whilst we were there, but if anything it added to the interest. Certainly not in any way a problem. Staff all pleasant and helpful. Dinner (in 1851) excellent. Wine cellar bar very atmospheric. The breakfast was superb. Thoroughly recommend.

Overpriced drinks (£10.50 for a medium glass of Chardonnay) and ridiculously overpriced and underwealming 1851 restaurant. Meagre portions at extortionate prices justified by theming of FINE DINING.
Also, display of public "honking" by 2 guests who had obviously consumed too much drink. Distasteful to say the least!

initially the room we were given (402) was v.dusty, mattress well used and room out the way and up about 50 steps. The fire door on the stair well could not be opened using the key card and we had to walk through the wedding area of the castle. This happened twice. We did complain and the staff sorted it out. There was nowhere to walk to in the immediate vicinity of the castle, all the wooded areas were marked 'Private, Keep out'. As there was a wedding on, the hotel was obviously full of wedding guests, so not quiet/relaxing.

Enjoyed Peckforton very much, nice rooms excellent staff
Only disappointment was the evening meal in the 1835 restaurant
menue was limited food was poor , I did eat my chicken but it was very dry .
My wife had the fish which she left as she said it was tasteless . My wife told the waitress when asked as to be fair a young lady came over straight away and asked what she could do to make it right.
She gave my wife a complimentary cheese and biscuits and deleted the meal of the bill and followed up with a complimentary port with the cheese.
They were very good but if we ever went back I would try the brasserie next time.

Have to say the management and staff are doing a fabulous job of keeping this huge old building going. The heating costs alone must be astronomic. We were there on the coldest night of the year so far and whilst the common areas were not that warm the bedrooms were very warm and cosy. We had a lovely meal and a quiet nights sleep and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Judging by the number of similar-aged folk being served glasses of sparkling wine with their meals we weren’t the only couple on a Travelzoo deal, so the deal is certainly good value for money. The castle is an amazing building, very quirky and wonderfully easy to get lost in whilst exploring. Our room was equally quirky and surprisingly, but satisfyingly, warm.
Other Comments
It’s not an especially extensive dinner menu and almost all the sides come at a further cost but we both liked what we had, although one of us found the creamed potatoes (mash, to you & me) too salty. Whether it is trendy and we are simply out of touch I’m not sure but we both felt the service was rather slow in the restaurant. Again, we both enjoyed breakfast which is self-service and everything you would expect, plenty of it, and hot where it should be.
I’m definitely not sure about this mandatory 10% tip added to your bill that can be opted out if you mention it to your server. We consciously didn’t in the restaurant and only noticed the next morning that it was also added to the bar bill every time we ordered drinks. As others have commented there isn’t a lot to do once there so I recommend a diversion into Northwich which is a very pleasant Cheshire town with plenty of history.

We loved everything about our stay at Peckforton Castle with Travelzoo. My husband and I stayed for one night. It was a midweek deal costing £135. Which included a glass of sparkling wine and £35 each to spend on dinner (not including Drinks). We also had a delicious choice from the hot and cold breakfast buffet. The castle was kept lovely and warm and there were nooks and chairs to relax. We loved the historical feel of the hotel, it is fairly dimly lit and has a labyrinth of corridors and rooms. Make sure you feel fit enough to climb steps and maybe bring a torch!
After breakfast we drove to the Chester Park & Ride and caught the Number 2PR bus into the centre of Chester; a walk by the river Dee and along the city wall and a browse around the shops. The buses were regular, efficient and cheap; so easy!
