Back Again: Broadway’s Best Return to The Stage

The curtain will soon rise again on stages across New York City, more than a year after the lights went dark. Broadway is back and audiences return to theaters this fall. The best part? Fans can secure some of the best seats in the house with tickets now on sale for the hottest shows — including Tony-winning musicals, award-winning headliners and highly anticipated newcomers.

Shows are starting to announce performance dates for the 2021-22 season, with more still to come. Several theaters updated their ticket policies and safety protocols to make returning to The Great White Way as easy and comfortable as possible.

Waitress

Returns Sept. 2 to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre

Grammy winner and composer Sara Bareilles reprises her starring role as beloved pie-maker Jenna Hunterson, as "Waitress" is one of the first shows to return to the Broadway stage in early September. Based on the 2007 film, the musical features a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson and direction by Tony-Award winner Diane Paulus. "Waitress" is back on Broadway through January 9 , 2022 only, with Bareilles starring as Jenna through October 17.


Chicago

Returns Sept. 14 to the Ambassador Theatre | Get tickets

Celebrating 25 years on Broadway, the razzle dazzle is back with its universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz. "Chicago" is a New York City institution, with six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations on its rap sheet. Relive the story of two 1920s-era women who go from criminal to celebrity, paired with crowd-pleasing songs like "All That Jazz” and "Cell Block Tango" alongside the suggestive, sexy, syncopated choreography of Bob Fosse.


Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Revel in the spectacular spectacular with “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” an extravagant Broadway mega-hit featuring ever-so-popular tunes like “Lady Marmalade.” This adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 movie is a theatrical celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and love, nominated for 14 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director (Alex Timbers). No wonder Time Out New York said “it’s hard to imagine how it can be topped.”


To Kill a Mockingbird

Returns Oct. 5 to the Shubert Theatre

Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “To Kill a Mockingbird” makes a comeback on Broadway with Jeff Daniels returning as Atticus Finch, and Celia Keenan-Bolger delivering her Tony Award-winning performance as Scout. This new adaptation by Aaron Sorkin is both “unmissable and unforgettable,” according to Rolling Stone, making it just as relevant as it was 60 years ago. Inspired by Lee’s childhood in Alabama, this classic courtroom and coming-of-age drama comes to life on stage for readers of all generations.


Freestyle Love Supreme

Returns Oct. 7 to the Booth Theatre

The hip-hop improv sensation “Freestyle Love Supreme” conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale returns to Broadway this fall with fresh rhymes every night. The unique production received a special 2020 Tony Award and was the subject of a Grammy-nominated Hulu documentary. Talented performers transform audience feedback into humorous bits, freestyle songs and musical numbers. As audience members, you not only watch the show, you help make the show—meaning, no two shows will ever be the same. Mrs. Doubtfire

Returns Oct. 21 to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Mrs. Doubtfire'' is a new musical comedy about the things we do to stay together. If you’re searching for a hilarious and heart-warming story to see with the whole family, this is it. Daniel Hillard, a struggling actor, proves he’ll do anything for his kids after losing custody in a divorce. He creates the alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in an attempt to stay in his children’s lives. But don’t worry, as Mrs. Doubtfire famously says: “Help is on the way, dears!”


The Phantom of the Opera 

Returns Oct. 22 to the Majestic Theatre | Get tickets

This fall, the Music of the Night can be heard again in New York's iconic Majestic Theatre. With a sweeping score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, "The Phantom of the Opera" tells the enticing story of the Phantom who haunts the stage of the Paris Opera House and subsequently falls in love with a beautiful young soprano. Audiences are in for a thrilling night to experience this musical masterpiece, winner of seven Tony Awards.


The Music Man

Returns Dec. 20 to the Winter Garden Theatre | Get tickets

Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winning actor Hugh Jackman makes his highly anticipated return to Broadway as Professor Harold Hill in “The Music Man.” Since its premiere on Broadway in 1957, the musical has been one of the most universally cherished treasures of American musical theater, and is sure to be a hot ticket this time around as well with a cast that also includes two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster. Get ready to tap and sing along as the Tony-winning musical returns to the stage right before Christmas.
