Why 2016 is the year to go
Thanks to a massive hotel building boom, it’s easier than ever to find a room in the city that never sleeps. With 40,000 rooms added to the supply in the last decade, hotels are offering deals to keep heads in beds. (In 2013, for example, the average daily rate for a NYC hotel was $290; this winter, you can routinely find 3- and 4-star hotels for less than $150 per night.) Tack on the growth of alternative options like Airbnb and competition for market share increases even further.
While New York City remains a popular international destination, the strong U.S. dollar makes it very expensive for Europeans, Canadians, Brazilians and other tourists, softening demand. What does this mean for you? Big deals in the Big Apple.
What is New York known for?!Everything. Let’s see … it’s the location for movies and TV shows. It’s got amazing landmarks like Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, “Saturday Night Live,” the High Line, a “Ghostbusters” fire station, the Freedom Tower. It’s gotBroadway shows; it’s got yellow cabs hustling everywhere; it’s got New Year’s Eve in Times Square. It’s got Park Avenue, 5th Avenue, Madison Avenue. It’s got everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to corner delis and the world’s best pizza. It’s the city that never sleeps. It’s got everything you ever thought would be in New Yawk — and you can get it at 4 a.m. if you want. Bada bing, bada boom.
One insider tip
Don’t be so Manhattan-focused when visiting; NYC is made up of five boroughs (Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island being the others). Make use of the subway system and the Staten Island ferry by exploring the awesome offerings of food and culture in the other parts of the city. Not to mention, New York has one of the best skylines in the world — and you need to leave Manhattan in order to actually see it.
Best time to visit
Traditionally, winter (January-February) and summer (July-August) are the best times to getNew York City hotel deals. Just be prepared for the seasons — cold winter winds or the hot hot heat of the subway platform in summer. But let’s face it, you’ll be inside shopping, visiting a museum, dining at a top restaurant or at a Broadway show anyway.
Try this
Drink a chocolate egg cream, a classic Brooklyn treat, which you can easily find at any diner or at a Junior’s location. There’s no egg involved! It’s basically deliciously fizzy chocolate milk.
