Guest Blog: Romance and Travel Tips from One Modern Couple

To celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary, we're bringing you 150 Travelzoo Tips -- one per day until July 1.

For Tip 13 (which coincides with Valentine's Day)  popular travel and lifestyle influencers Carolann Hughes and Macrae Sutton –  the world-travelling lovebirds known as One Modern Couple – share their top Canadian destinations for a romantic getaway. 

It didn't take us long in our travels to discover that we had a pretty amazing backyard of a country to play in, and so we did what anyone would do after a realization like that – we ran out to play!

We found ourselves exploring more of Canada, finding incredible places and collecting experiences in the many great destinations for couples. We've found a few favourites along the way, including these three that regularly top our list!

Quebec City

Quebec City is a special place for couples. There are festivals throughout the year, incredible gastronomic experiences and stunning views from almost every corner of the city, which means you’ll be hard pressed not to find some quality time together. One of our favourite things to do together is simply walking the beautiful streets of Old Quebec before delving deeper into the city itself.

Local tip: Head to Terrasse Pierre-Dugua-de Mons for one of the best lookouts in the city. A picnic in the summer or a view of a winter wonderland will help spark some romance!

Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick

Though Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick is a small town, it was here that we saw one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena up close and personal. Hopewell Rocks can be found here in the Bay of Fundy where you’ll also find the highest tidal range in the world – and witness it in action.

At high tide, the rocks are barely visible, but at low-tide, the water recedes enough that you are able to literally walk along the ocean floor.

Local Tip: To get the full effect, you’ll probably want to see the area at high and low tide. We went in the afternoon for high tide and then arrived the next day at low tide to see the comparison. It’s truly unbelievable!

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

The Niagara Region may be most well-known for Niagara Falls but for us, there’s another reason to visit. Niagara-on-the-Lake's geography and location create a perfect climate for growing grapes – and that’s exactly what is done in the area, in abundance. Our favourite thing to do is buy a pass to one of the wine festivals, take a trip to the area and try out some food and wine pairings while taking in the spectacular views.

Local Tip: Even if you’re not into wine, head to a winery like Trius. We love it because of the gorgeous property and the fact that we can enjoy a sensational meal with, or without, a tasting.
