Tampa is a laid back city with a thriving arts scene and charming riverfront. Historic highlights include Ybor City, a historic district in downtown, once the cigar capital of the world. Family-friendly attractions within an hour’s drive are plentiful; Busch Gardens, the Lowry Park Zoo and Big Cat Rescue are must-stops for travelers with children. Tampa is also home to two major sports franchises — the Tampa Bay Rays and the Buccaneers — both of which draw a major local following. Tampa is a half hour drive to some of the best beaches in the country, known for fine white sand, dolphin sightings and spectacular sunsets. St. Petersburg (or “St. Pete” to Floridians) is a quirky vacation town that’s home the Dali Museum and the Chihuly Collection. The daily sunset celebration on Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach, featuring local artists and street performers, is not to be missed. While especially hot summers are the norm on the Gulf Coast, the area enjoys many more clear days than the state’s east coast.
