What a great deal through Travelzoo for this hotel! Conveniently located two blocks from Union Square and not quite to the sketchy part yet. Hotel very nicely restored and my room is huge for San Fran! Very clean and modern, nicer than the JW Marriott room in downtown LA. The deal with Travelzoo with included breakfast and extra $50 bar credit was more than I needed given there for business and had most meals included, but a great deal. Bat food was actually pretty good for a light dinner. Gym was enough but a bit brighter lighting would be better. Would love to go back when I. Town with family again.

Lovely, historical hotel. The Redwood room was beautiful and we enjoyed the jazz on Thursday. The staff was welcoming and Steve, the concierge went out of his way for us. The only negative was the heavy perfumed air in the lobby. I have fragrance sensitivity and It caused my asthma to flair. Even in the Redwood Room, the fragrance could be smelled and felt. We left a day early because it made me feel sick. It’s too bad because I definitely would have gone back

Flew in specifically for a show at the Curran Theatre and the theatre was only a couple doors away from the hotel so the location was great! Two blocks from Union Square, plenty of restaurants (as anywhere in SF), food and beverage credit was generous. Slept well, room was spacious and had everything I needed. Wish there was room service but that was the only “downside.”

The hotel was beautiful and while renovated, still retains the charm of a 100+ year old property. The rooms were spacious and quiet with very comfortable beds and a nice sitting area. The staff were all wonderful, especially Albert the Bell Captain who was full of helpful suggestions and recommendations.

Upon check in the clerk didn’t know that we had a $50 credit for welcome drinks but upon showing her my confirmation she immediately corrected her paperwork . We had a beautiful corner room with plenty of light . The whole experience here was seamless and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating and kind . Breakfast was wonderful . Definitely recommend this hotel .

The hotel itself is great and the staff was wonderful. The bar was closed for a private event the night we arrived but the woman that checked us in said we could use our $50 drink credit at breakfast the next morning. Breakfast was delicious!

The only downside and this has nothing to do with the hotel itself but the streets surrounding the hotel are ROUGH! We’ve stayed in the city many times and thought things were getting better but sadly they don’t appear to be. It was like a scene out of The Walking Dead. People are openly using drugs, there was feces, urine, and a syringe on the sidewalk. Half naked women ran out of a “spa” yelling and banging on the hood of some guy’s car who was trying to get away. No one hassled us but it’s anything but a relaxing stroll in that area. I feel for legitimate businesses trying to keep their doors open.

The location is a few blocks away from Union square where the Fashion stores and ubiquitous restaurants are. The king room is huge and elegantly designed. We had an a la carte breakfast at Frederick’s. The breakfast menu options are decent and substantial. It’s also near Toni Rembe Theater for Broadway like performances. All in all we had a great experience. And we wouldn’t mind staying at the Cliff on our return to downtown San Francisco

Wonderful experience at the Clift. Service was exceptional. Steve the concierge made outstanding recommendations for dinner - great food, not touristy. Location was great - close to theaters, restaurants, Big Bus stop. Redroom was lovely, but the ambience is not as high class as advertised. Dress code is very lacks - anything goes. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

I had a great experience. The desk clerk was very helpful. He listened to my request of a quiet room and I feel he found a good room for me. The first night I heard a lot of sirens but either I got used to them or there weren't any sirens the next nights. The room was small but that didn't bother me except that the drawers for putting my clothes in were too close to the bed and it was a little difficult to open them. The lobby and the Redwood room were really nice. The elevators worked well. The area is just on the border of a bad area, but it was fine. I liked the bathroom and the room darkening curtains. I wish they didn't use small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and soap. Many other hotels I have stayed in these days have refillable dispensers. All in all a very good stay!

The issues going on were not the hotels fault but it had to do with the amount of transients in the area. It’s not the most pleasant experience when you walk outside and someone is shooting up right in front of you. Unfortunately, that’s not just this area but downtown San Francisco as a whole. Now about the hotel-rooms were huge, but we had a view of the alleyway which wasn’t extremely pleasant. However, we just kept the curtains closed for the most part. I would definitely come back because the staff is extremely accommodating and they even held our bags while we walked around the city after we had checked out.

For $39/night, I was upgraded to a penthouse room on the 17th floor, which was just a big box with big windows. There was nothing inviting. The furniture and bed were uncomfortable, and the room smelled like an old house. There were stains on the bed, possibly from body fluids. Horrible!

Check-in was smooth, with very friendly front desk staff. Our initial room (532) was expansive and nice, but we soon realized that there was a frequent clanking noise coming through the walls, since it was adjacent to the service elevator. The front desk immediately moved us to another room which was a little smaller, but still nice. In my opinion, they shouldn't even have that 532 room available for guests, or at least warn them ahead of time about the noise.
The Redwood Room is a classic lounge, with excellent drinks. We saw a terrific live jazz ensemble on a Thursday night.
The fitness room is big and has a lot of cardio and weight equipment. My wife used it, and enjoyed it.
Valet parking is predictably expensive ($70/night), but actually not the highest in the Union Square area. The valet drivers take about 15-20 minutes to retrieve the car, but it was otherwise reliable service.
Standard wi-fi is pretty slow (about 10 Mbps), so you may want to join the Sonesta Travelpass program to get faster wi-fi. (I didn't do that, so I don't know how much faster it is).
Location is great, especially for theater shows (right next to the Curran and ACT). It's a short walk to Union Square. The immediate neighborhood isn't blighted.

The rooms were large and very clean. Beds were comfortable. The shower was really nice and the products supplies were great. There was a small mini-fridge and coffee maker. Lots of really neat vintage remnants of the old building, but also modern and clean. The staff were very nice and helpful. The area was good - just two blocks from Union Square. Easy to get to using muni and then walking a little. The bar inside of the hotel is the Redwood Room. Upscale and pricey, but beautiful. There is a 24 hour diner just down the block, which was helpful when we arrived late and the hotel stopped providing food at 10pm. The food at the Pinecrest Diner was really good. The hotel is right next door to the Curran theater, and another theater, which made it easy to go to a show. Highly recommended.

The lobby and restaurants were very nice, our room was clean (cleanest hotel shower I’ve ever been in), and we even got to check in early which was a huge plus since we arrived on a very early flight. The location was a great home base near Union Square and about 7 minute walk from a train/bus stop. Would definitely recommend and stay again!

Our room was nice enough room but dark due to no overhead lights. It’s an older hotel that has been remodeled. Our room location ( rm 531) hod NO view, just a brick wall outside the window. And it was right next to the staff service elevators which could be noisy. Did we receive a poor room location because we booked Travel Zoo deal? Makes you wonder.

When I asked for the $10 daily food & bev credit, the front desk said oh we just wave the resort fee and you don’t get the credit. So they didn’t give it to us. That wording in the Travel Zoo deal seems to indicate a customer DOES get ALL the benefits of the resort fee but that is not what the hotel thinks!
Seems like this is deceptive on the part of Travel Zoo or either the hotel is wrong and we should have gotten the daily credit for the 2 days of our stay. This should be clarified with the hotel.
