Pebble Beach (New Forest)
Location: New Milton, Hampshire
Why we love it: You get the best of both the coast and the countryside, as this clifftop hotel has views of the Isle of Wight and Needles, whilst being only a 10-minute drive from the New Forest. The restaurant has an AA Rosette, an AA Breakfast award, and was listed in The Daily Telegraph's list of Britain's best beach cafes and restaurants. It also has a deli and café next door, selling local produce and beer from the local microbrewery. What's nearby: In 1079 the New Forest was declared a royal hunting forest by William the Conqueror. Grazing rights were put in place to allow the deer and boar to run freely; it's this that's shaped the forest into what we see today - look out for the free-roaming cattle and the famous New Forest pony. One of the most popular villages to visit is Beaulieu, home to the National Motor Museum, Palace House and the abbey. The Rufus Stone near Minstead is an interesting spot; it's said to be where King William II was killed with an arrow whilst hunting in 1100AD.

Arundell Arms (Dartmoor & Exmoor)
Location: Lifton, Devon
Why we love it: This 300-year-old family-run inn has a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant that showcases local produce. It's also "one of England's major hotels for country sports and fly fishing", according to The Good Food Guide - the hotel owns 20 miles of fishing rights on the River Tamar.What's nearby: Cycle the Granite Way, an 11-mile path along a former railway line from Okehampton to Lydford; on the way you'll see Meldon Quarry, Sourton Tors and Lydford Gorge. Alternatively, visit Parsonage Farm at the War Horse Valley Country Farm Park, the farm that inspired the novel War Horse. There's a War Horse and World War I exhibition, a display of old farming machinery and a farming area with micro-pigs, alpacas, ponies and rabbits.

The Lake Country House & Spa (Brecon Beacons & Pembrokeshire)
Location: Llangammarch Wells, Powys
Why we love it: This former hunting lodge has a 3-acre lake in the grounds, plus thick woods and rhododendron-lined pathways. Inside you'll find a restaurant with a 300-strong wine list. There's also a spa with an indoor pool, a sauna and an outdoor hot tub that overlooks the lake.What's nearby: Walking, cycling, horse riding, abseiling, caving and mountain biking are just some of the things you can do in the Brecon Beacons. It's also an International Dark Sky Reserve, making it ideal for stargazing. The Usk Reservoir, a 45-minute drive from the hotel, is an ideal spot to set up your telescope. Location: Halifax, Yorkshire

For a family day out visit Bolton Abbey in Wharfdale to see the ruins of the 12th-century Augustinian monastery or go for a walk, passing across the 60 stepping stones to a beach area that's ideal for paddling.

Location: Windermere, Cumbria

Coniston Water, half an hour away, has a steam yacht gondola, which you can board for a 45-minute trip from Coniston Pier to Brantwood.

Location: Keswick, Cumbria
Why we love it: This Scandi-style hotel in Keswick's bustling market square was renovated in 2015. The Brossen Steakhouse has an AA Rosette and there are two cosy bars serving hearty pub grub. All the beds are handmade by local craftsmen and Herdwick Bedrooms are named after local Herdwick sheep.What's nearby: Being in the centre of Keswick, the hotel has tearooms, shops, gardens and museums on its doorstep.
