3 Alternative City Breaks in Europe
When considering a European city break, thoughts automatically turn to the likes of Paris, Rome, Prague and Amsterdam. Don't get us wrong, we love these beautiful destinations, but sometimes it's good to spread the net a little wider -- to some of the less-heralded, but equally special places that are just a short flight away. Here are our suggestions for some other capital cities that may sweep you off your feet.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia often gets overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours -- Croatia, Hungary, Austria and Italy -- which is surprising given the country's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. And with tourism in the capital on the increase, we say get your trip booked soon. One of the best ways to experience Ljubljana (pronounced "lub-lee-yana") is on a food tour (like this one from Ljubljanajam), where you can learn about the city's history while sampling a selection of local dishes -- including horse meat if you're feeling brave. Bike tours along the river (the city's main hangout in the summer) are also popular. Be sure to work up a thirst -- some of the city's best bars are to be found here. If you have time, a day-trip out of the city to Lake Bled is a must. Slovenia's biggest and arguably most beautiful attraction, Lake Bled is set in the foothills of the Julian Alps. Visit the castle overlooking the lake and take a boat to the island at its centre for the full experience.
Zagreb, Croatia
Sure, the likes of Dubrovnik and Split have the allure of the Adriatic Sea, and we won't blame you for heading there. But you might be missing a trick if you ignore Zagreb: the capital of Croatia has plenty to offer, from 18th-century buildings to markets -- and the coast isn't far if you really can't resist. The Upper Town is roughly a thousand years old (so if you love cobbled streets, this is the place to be) and includes the Presidential Palace, museums and galleries. The Lower Town, which dates back to the 19th century, will service all your entertainment needs, with restaurants, bars and theatres aplenty. We recommend taking a walk around the colourful Dolac Market, visiting the 13th-century Stone Gate and taking a walk in the Botanical Garden.
Oslo, Norway
Norway is well known for its fjords -- the destination for summer cruisers who go to experience the midnight sun and dramatic scenery. Its natural landscapes are all well and good, but the cities in this country shouldn't be overlooked. The capital, Oslo, typifies the modern charm of Scandinavian cities: it's sleek, clean and beautiful, much like the inhabitants. Don't miss out on the Opera House, which is on the harbour and appears as though it emerges from the water. You can even walk up the white, ramp-like roof for panoramic views of the city. Oslo is also the starting point of the famous Oslo-Bergen railway journey, considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
