Advice on Travel to Tunisia: Your Questions Answered
Updated on 27 January, 2016. This article was originally published in the immediate wake of the Tunisia terrorist attack in June, 2015. The Foreign Office has since updated its position and is now advising against all but essential travel to the country. See below for a more detailed breakdown of this advice.
What is the government's latest advice on travel to Tunisia?
As of 27 January, 2016, the website for the The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) states:
"The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to:
- the Chaambi Mountain National Park area
- the Tunisia-Algeria border crossing points at Ghardimaou, Hazoua and Sakiet Sidi Youssef
- the militarized zone south of, but not including, the towns of El Borma and Dhehiba
- within 5km of the Libya border area from north of Dhehiba up to but not including the Ras Ajdir border crossing
The FCO advise against all but essential travel to the rest of Tunisia. If you choose to travel to or remain in Tunisia then you should check that your insurance policy provides adequate cover. You should be especially vigilant and follow the advice of the Tunisian security authorities."

Are tour operators allowing people to cancel or amend bookings?
Thomas Cook has cancelled all bookings to Tunisia up until 30 April 2016 and "plans to restart its holiday programme to Tunisia for Summer 2016 dependent on current FCO advice changing". Thomas Cook said:
"Customers due to travel up and including that date have the following options:
Those who wish to amend to another popular winter sun destination, such as the Canary Islands or Turkey, will be provided with a £50 holiday voucher per adult to re-book their holiday.
Customers who wish to re-book for a Summer 16 holiday instead will also be offered free amendments to an alternative Thomas Cook holiday of their choice, paying only if there is a difference in price.
- Customers due to travel up to and including 30th April 2016 will be able to cancel or amend their holiday free of charge."
