Lodore Falls Hotel
Location: Keswick
Why we love it: This family-owned hotel overlooking Derwentwater has character in abundance and guarantees a warm welcome. On top of that, there’s an indoor pool and sauna, an AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant and a waterfall in the grounds. We also love the free bike hire for guests, making it super-easy to explore the surrounding area.
Don’t miss… getting out on the lake. As you can see below, it's well worth it.

Rothay Garden
Location: Grasmere
Why we love it: There's plenty to recommend here. Firstly, the location: Rothay Garden is set in two acres of grounds on the edge of Grasmere village, putting it five minutes from Dove Cottage (the former home of poet William Wordsworth) and less than five miles from Ambleside.
The hotel’s centrepiece is the 2-AA-Rosette Garden Restaurant. Helmed by Andrew Burton, one of only 300 Master Chefs of Great Britain, it was the winner of the Lakeland Dining Excellence Award at the 2014 Cheshire Life and Lancashire Life Food and Drink Awards.
Don’t miss… the on-site Riverside Spa, where you’ll find floor-to-ceiling windows with fell views.

Hillthwaite House Hotel
Location: Windermere
Why we love it: This family-run favourite, just a few minutes' walk from Bowness-on-Windermere, was originally a 6-bedroom private house – a few extensions and additions later (including an indoor pool with sauna and steam room), it retains a reassuringly boutique feel. Views are the focal point in the restaurant, where locally sourced ingredients take pride of place on the traditional menu.
Don’t miss… the chance to hop on a lake cruise. Bowness Pier is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel; from there you can catch a boat to take in the views.

Why we love it: This listed Victorian property reopened in July, 2014, after a multimillion-pound refurbishment and collaboration with Laura Ashley. Expect elegant furnishings, lush fabrics and classic designs combined with modern features such as a glass reception area. There’s also an indoor pool, a stylish cocktail bar and two restaurants.

Inn on the Square
Location: Keswick
Why we love it: This Scandi-style hotel in Keswick's market square was renovated in 2015. The Brossen Steakhouse has an AA Rosette and there are two cosy bars serving hearty pub grub. Being in the centre of Keswick, the hotel has tearooms, shops, gardens and museums on its doorstep.
The hotel is a great choice if you want to bring your dog. Two dogs can stay in a bedroom, and there is a hose and towels to give your pooch a shower after muddy walks. They’re also welcome to snuggle up by your feet in both bars and the hotel lounge.
Don’t miss… Derwentwater, a 3-mile-long body of water surrounded by wooded fells, which is a 10-minute walk away; try the 8-mile hike around the shores or take a cruise from Keswick pier.

Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel
Location: Alston
Why we love it: The very epitome of a cosy country hideaway, Lovelady Shield is set in landscaped gardens on the site of a 13th-century convent on the Pennine Way, with the River Nent running through the garden. It’s just on the edge of the Lake District and 22 miles south of Northumberland National Park.
The restaurant has two AA Rosettes and an award-winning 100-strong wine list. The Lovelady also holds a VisitEngland Breakfast Award, so you know you'll be starting your day the right way.
Don’t miss… the cosy library and lounge with log fires that give a low-key, country-house feel.

The Beech Hill Hotel
Where: Windermere
Why we love it: Beech Hill’s location is nothing short of spectacular, with views over Lake Windermere and the Western Fells. Fortunately, many of the bedrooms have private balconies to make the most of the vistas.
Staying here gives you instant access to loads of walking trails and mountains plus, Windermere golf club and Bowness-on-Windermere town are both less than a 10-minute drive. The AA-Rosette Burlington’s menu features local Cumbrian fare.
Don’t miss… the opportunity to kick back and relax in the lounge. If you can take your eyes off the lake views, it’s a lovely place to sit with a book, borrow one of the many board games or sip on an aperitif before dinner is served.
