Itinerary
Begin with a 2-night stay in Cape Town. You could take the cable car up Table Mountain, see the penguin colonies at Robben Island. Or, tour the old-growth vineyards of the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Winelands. You'll have plenty of time to explore before boarding Norwegian Sun to call at:
- Walvis Bay... renowned for its breath-taking scenery, it's home to one of the largest flocks of flamingos in southern Africa. Excursions including dune safaris and desert wildlife-spotting trips can be taken from here.
- Luanda... this stop is the is administrative, cultural, and urban centre of its country. It's divided into two parts; Baixa de Luanda and Cidade Alta. You could visit Saint Michael Fortress, or take a walk along the harbour.
- São Tomé Island... almost 90% of the island is covered in dense jungle. This stop is very popular with biologists because of its wide array of wildlife and pristine beaches to tropical rainforests.
- Abidjan... this city's glistening skyscrapers overlook the waves of the Atlantic. Visit Grand Bassam, St. Paul's Cathedral and Banco National Park.
- Dakar... you'll find bustling markets, electrifying nightlife and pretty beaches. Gorée Island, a UNESCO Historic Monument, is a must-see if you're a history buff. The stunning colours of Lake Retba also make for a magical sight.
- Praia, Santiago Island... visit the capital of Cape Verde. Explore the colourful markets of this bustling city.
- Tenerife... the island is filled with "extraordinary beauty and diversity" (Lonely Planet). Its picturesque capital, Santa Cruz, is a perfect day-trip location.
- Gran Canaria... explore this island's dramatic landscapes, which range from the green north to the desert-like south. This stop is also known for its year-round mild climate.
- Funchal... the capital of Madeira is known for its picturesque centre, colourful gardens, and delightful cafes. The stop was voted the World's Leading Island Destination at the 2023 World Travel Awards.
- Vigo... soak up a welcoming atmosphere at one of the city's many tapas bars. Take in views over the scenic bay from the 17th-century hilltop Castro Fortress
You'll disembark in Southampton and make your way home.
Ship details
Norwegian Sun is one of Norwegian Cruise Line's smaller ships. It carries around 1900 passengers at full capacity. Cruise Critic praises "a great overall experience with tons of dining and activity choices". No-fee dining includes the two main dining rooms, buffet, garden cafe, outdoor grill, and churrascaria. You can also order breakfast to your room free of charge.
