The Park Head hotel is part of The Auckland Project. A charity whose aim is to revitalise the historic mining town of Bishop Auckland.
The attractions within the project recount the town's rich history. The nearly 1000-year-old Auckland Palace was once the seat of Durham's Prince Bishops. The Spanish Gallery celebrates the art, history, and culture of the Spanish Golden Age.
The hotel's Oak Room restaurant features a vivid colour palate and uses fresh ingredients. The produce is grown in the palace gardens or locally sourced from across the county.
The hotel's guests can receive discounted entry to Raby Castle and the open-air Beamish Museum. Enquire at reception for details.
The historic Durham city is a 20-minute drive away. Here, you'll discover an 11th-century cathedral and a Norman castle.

Rooms set around a courtyard and garden area at the rear. Would def like to go back with friends.

The bus stop to the Auckland Project very close, lots to see and do there. You can catch buses to Durham and Newcastle. We walked to the project as it was a dry bright day. Footpath was good so far but ended up walking along a wall next to the golf course. Would imagine it could be very messy when wet.

On arrival, we were allocated a Courtyard room, which was immaculately clean, cosy and colourful. We were very surprised how quiet it was: even though we had the window open we couldn't hear any noise from passing traffic at all. The food was excellent and the choice extensive. the staff were very polite and helpful.

Room heating didn't work. Hotel had left a small electric convector to heat a large room. Insufficient. Windows streaming with condensation in the morn. Food was cold, lukewarm at best. My chicken escalope was over cooked and virtually inedible. Mashed spuds dry and hard to eat with no gravy with the dish.

The Auckland Project was well worth visiting but nothing else of much interest in the vicinity.
The Park Head restaurant was very nice and obviously popular with locals. Bishop Auckland town centre is very interesting historically but quite neglected otherwise.

We had a very pleasant stay at Park Head Hotel. The staff/service was excellent & were made to feel very welcome. Food was very good especially the cooked breakfasts, of which there was a vast amount to choose from & were quickly cooked to order. Rooms well appointed with the extra treat of having a window in the bathroom. Shower was very good with choice of drench or regular shower heads. Tap on the wash basin was rather large & right in the centre making wet shaving awkward. The hotel is situated beside a busy main road but as the accommodation block is separate from the hotel reception, dining area & bars, traffic noise wasn’t really a problem.
Other Comments
The deal we had included The Auckland Project passes, which we had good use of. Bishop Auckland is a very pleasant town to visit & plan to make a return trip to. Plus there are quite a lot of other attractions close by: Raby Castle & Locomotion as well as the city of Durham.

The hotel is lovely with very good staff. The food was very good and plentiful particularly the breakfast which happily was not all buffet style. All food was cooked to order. The dining area was nice but functional rather than comfortable. Our room ( 4 ) very clean and recently refurbished. The bathroom was good but small.
Other Comments
Negatives were no tissues in the room, no fridge, the toilet roll was on the floor, no full mirror in the room. Otherwise it was great

My husband & I had the most wonderful 2 night stay at the Park Head hotel recently. We arrived a little earlier than the check in time of 3pm (we had set off early as we travelled from Blackpool) & the lovely man on reception let us have the key to our room at 1pm as it was all ready for us, he couldn't have been more helpful, as we're all the wonderful staff.
Our room was lovely, we especially loved the little courtyard where we could sit in the beautiful sunshine.
The breakfast was each morning was amazing & plentiful, we also dined there both evenings & really enjoyed our meals.... compliments to the chef, the ambience was perfect, the staff in the dining room couldn't do enough for us.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & are planning to book again for the spring of 2025 xx

Very friendly and helpful staff - including those at the Auckland Project. Nice food in the restaurant. Good spacious room - I think we had a "King" room but not sure we had a King bed. Would certainly go back - walkable into town and Palace etc, but also buses from a stop about 100m away. The Auckland Project passes were very welcome and were a big saving - we didn't get round everything but will probably go back and tick all the boxes - and another leisurely look round the Palace. I hope the hotel and the Project thrive - they deserve to!
