Why We Love This Hotel

  • Wotton House Country Estate Hotel dates from 1618, and was built by the Evelyn family. Diarist, writer, and gardener John Evelyn was born there. His chronicles of 17th-century England later led to the publication of Samuel Pepys's own diary.
  • The Wotton Estate has 13 acres of grounds, which include England's earliest Italian garden. It was completed in 1652 and features Roman-style temples and original mosaics.
  • The hotel's 1877 Restaurant is set around a central olive tree. It offers a contemporary bistro menu.
  • Wotton House has extensive leisure facilities for guests to use. These include an indoor swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, a sauna, and a gym.
  • The surrounding Surrey Hills National Landscape offers a host of walking and cycling routes. Box Hill, famed for its views across the North Downs, is a 20-minute drive away.

We enjoyed our stay at Wotton House, made good use of the spa and pool (which was clean and well maintained) and had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Our only slight disappointment was the cooked breakfast - we come down to breakfast early and some of the cooked items were cold and dried out. It’s hard to keep buffet items super fresh, but as we were early it seemed at odds. There was plenty of choice though, so opted for pastries instead.

Major mix up on room numbers and deal types at check in and check out. Not the fault of front of house staff, but the hotel’s system. I’ll be writing to them.

The package deal was appealing. It is a dog and child-friendly hotel so not quite as fun for a girls' weekend perhaps. It did not feel as luxe as some country hotels, e.g.friendliness of staff, condition of hotel and grounds, low ceilings and big dehunidifer with tube out window in bedroom, music playing was a bit cheesy, my martini mocktail served in a normal glass with plastic straws, etc. Breakfast was great and overall a fun stay.

Very impressive building and beautiful gardens with views that we we could not see from our room. We only had a rundown brick and stone so called folly to look at.

LImited access for disabled parking there is only two spaces. The room was a very long walk with cases and no help available. The room 216 was extremely cramped and hot due to the face it was over the spa which emanated lots of heat into the room that could not be dissipated due to the sash window being governed to open only about 5" or so. There was no fan until we requested one and the seemed surprised there was not one there already as they knew it was hot. There was no hooks anywhere in the room particularly to hang wet coats and also none in the bathroom for wet towels and dressing gowns. The shower tray was about 6" off the ground and very slippy and no where to hang on to only the glass shower screen itself that was very wobbly. There was a massive crack in the handbowl and the shower gel and creams were almost impossible to dispense. The room was very dark even with the lights on. The menu was extremely limited and also expensive (as we had £28 each to spend) as there were only about two options available at that price. The service was poor as we had to wait at least half any hour for tea and coffee in the morning despite asking several times. The same again with the dessert menu and we had to ask repeated if they had forgotten and they had. It was full to capacity and had to queue for everything breakfast time and the bacon and sausage was under cooked. Limited options available for vegetarians and vegans. We told them about our allergies and they were forgotten. Definitely not an experience to be repeated. We have paid half the price and had far better room, food and service. When I complained to the reception I was asked would I like a call from the hotel to air my views and as yet I have not had a call. Overall a bad experience.

My partner got terrible food poisoning from what we believe was the food from the kitchen the night before. He has never been this sick with food poisoning before. We were told he had to go to A&E for a sample test or return to his GP for a sample test. Well we don’t believe in wasting hospital NHS Time and by the time he got through to his GP this morning he could not get triaging for a specimen pot and couldn’t give a sample
