The Olde Bell first opened its doors in 1135 for visitors to the nearby Benedictine Priory. Among England's oldest inns, it is still welcoming visitors today. Overnight stays are nearly 50% off for Travelzoo Members.

Overnight accommodation in a Superior Double room, with full English breakfast, for two
A bottle of prosecco on arrival (once per stay, worth £40)

Parts of The Olde Bell date back to the 1130s. This makes it possibly the oldest inn in England, and among the oldest in the world. Its sanctus bell signalled to the monks that an important visitor had arrived. It still hangs over the door.
The restaurant serves dishes made with produce grown in the inn's own kitchen garden.
Superior rooms are in the historic inn building or in the Malt House. Deluxe rooms are larger and are set within the Brick Barn. Luxury rooms are in the Main Inn or Malt House and each have a claw-foot bath tub.
The inn has hosted Winston Churchill, Dwight D Eisenhower, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Cary Grant.
The property is in the picturesque village of Hurley, close to the River Thames. "There isn’t a prettier village on this graceful stretch of the Thames," says The Times.
Follow the riverside path to Marlow, a charming town known for high-end restaurants and celebrity residents.

Nice stay but spoiled by waiting until 4.30pm before our room was ready .Due to Two weddings and rooms not ready .Also shower was useless .
Room was a bit tired looking with several nasty stains on the carpet .
Breakfast was adequate but not the best we have had at other hotels in the Travelzoo offers .

We have been before after purchasing a great deal via Travelzoo. Unfortuanately this time was not as good. For the amount of guest they didnt have enough staff. I ordered pancakes for breakfast but never got them as the waiter forgot to order them, mind you, he was rushed off his feet. No plates at the cold buffet, and hot buffet was barely warm. There was a wedding, which they clearly knew, so should have put on more staff. Shame because they will lose custom because of this. unsure of our return😌

We checked in on Tuesday 25th March at around 4pm and after quite a long wait at Reception were allocated Room 28. When we checked around the Room we found that the telephone was dead; one of the bedside lamps was'nt working and the toilet pan was leaking at the base. We reported this straightaway and the Duty Manager came to the room to check the problems. He found a standby bedside lamp and provided a bath mat to put in front of the toilet pan and said he would arrange for the maintenance man to check out the problems the following day (Wednesday 26/03). We were out all day and went we checked back into our Room nothing had been fixed and worse still the Room had'nt ben serviced. When we complained at Reception about the Room not having been serviced we were told that we should have been advised when we first checked in of the Hotel policy that unless you ask for the Room to be serviced it will not happen - clearly we were not informed !! Also none of the problem noted by the Duty Manager the previous day had been dealt with.
To compound our great disappointment, on the first night we had booked a meal in the restaurant at 18.30hrs. - we sat at our table for about 30 minutes before anyone took a drinks order or gave us menus to choose from - our first course was served almost 1 hour after we had sat down at our table. To make matters worse, on the second night we booked a meal for 18.00hrs. - the service was much better as well as the food but when we had finished we were asked to settle the bill having expected to do so when we checked out on Thursday morning particularly since we were not asked to settle our meal bill the previous evening !! All in all a very disappointing experience !!
We are seriously considering writing to Best Western Hotels asking what they think about our unfortunate experience staying at The Olde Bell.

The Olde Bell is a lovely old pub ‘ hotel. The staff are lovely. However we had a few issues. French sparkling wine given instead of Prosecco. On the website it states Noble toiletries but this is not the case .Items on the dinner menu not served as described ie honey carrots served plain. Silly little things but these things do matter. Poor service at bar; absent barman, didn’t have drinks we wanted & £22 for g&t & beer; no one to take breakfast order. No one on reception when we arrived. Public areas need a good clean. On good side, lovely location & interesting history. Good walks nearby & nice towns to explore. Luxury Room was small with windy stairs up to bedroom. Comfortable bed, all clean & lovely bathroom.

A nice hotel but service on the whole was poor. Very expensive bar prices. Didn’t eat dinner in restaurant . Breakfast was ok, though cooked food like bacon & scrambled eggs out in covered hot dishes was cold. Would I stay here again? I doubt it.

Spacious rooms , good linen and clean, this is potentially an excellent venue , but more staff required in service. I would stay again if these things were changed

The room needed attention on arrival , but spacious and clean, not enough staff for evening meal, 2 staff also covering the bar area, so very long wait for food and reduced menu on both days. Breakfast was excellent with different staff, it ran a lot smoother and was of a good standard which saved the overall opinion of this hotel , strangely we have table service on day one and buffet day 2?

We paid for an update to a de luxe room but it was hardly that. No headboard, a horrible red folding desk lamp with an orange extension lead and an ill fitting quilt and cover on the bed. Breakfast was fresh. We had a complimentary bottle of prosecco on arrival, which I asked if we could have later with dinner, but I was refused.
We ate in the restaurant, which was busy, staff were friendly. There were a couple of mix ups, my husband phoned to book the restaurant, the following day I was contacted to ask if we wanted to book the restaurant. When we arrived for our meal, it was thought we were booked to eat in the bar just little things, but felt things were not communicated etc

Rang the hotel 4 times on different days to book for dinner and ask for check in time-never answered.
Arrived at 3pm , kept waiting for an hour and half before room ready .
Bathroom was freezing , shower head and sink tap were completely gunged up so was horrible to use. Top on shower gel not put on properly.
Booked dinner online for the Friday evening a week before but was kept waiting an hour and a half and had to ask to see the Manager .
An Asian man said he was the manager when he wasn’t and was so rude .
Desert was served cold as the kitchen closed when we were seated . We were told we could eat in the bar on a low table ,which was unacceptable.
Really disappointed as this was our third stay , but the whole hotel was awful .
Never had to give a negative review since joining Travelzoo about 7 years ago .

Requested and confirmed a particular room. On arrival not available & given alot smaller room in an annexe. Not clean, half a toilet roll. Requested they serviced it next day. No more toilet rolls, no tea/coffee and unmade bed. Just clean towels on the bed, which we didn't request. The 'Prosecco ' in our room was cheap sparkling wine, not Prosecco. Breakfast was chaos, no plates, bowls, bread, coffee, milk and half the food. Constantly Requested plates and bowls, as did everyone. Wine over £30 a bottle, very steep. Windows didn't open. Key drop on leaving, so you couldn't voice your opinions on the stay!

We were a little disappointed that our room was not in the old building but in a barn conversion across the road. The room was spacious but was not as clean as we expected. The shower surround needed descaling and the bathroom floor was not clean.
Dust on the walls behind the bedside cabinets and no headboard on the bed. There were plug sockets at head level on one side of the bed (would have been hidden by a headboard!)
Staff, although pleasant enough, did not always know what they were doing and some uniforms were not in the best condition - there did not appear to be anyone overseeing staff appearance.
We ate at the restaurant and both our meals were very good, cooked beautifully and a highlight of our stay.
Hurley is a pleasant little village with easy access to the River Thames and a good position for visiting Marlow, Henley and other towns along the river.

Only disappointment was with one of the evening meals…. The steak. The menu was expensive even after 20% discount. However, we would definitely stay again but would probably avoid the evening dinner there

Customer service was lacking. One member of staff was good. Everyone else seemed to lack training.
We decided to eat in the restaurant on the first night. Lots of things were off the menu. I ended up with an egg sandwich and a portion of chips. Cutlery wasn’t clean. We were given a sweet menu covered in chocolate. Our coffee was unceremoniously delivered without saucers or teaspoons.
We couldn’t charge anything to our room and we were automatically charged 12.5% for poor service.
Breakfast next morning was good.
Breakfast the following morning was haphazard. Our table again had dirty cutlery and only one mug. No teaspoons. We waited for ages for someone to come to serve us and had to ask in the end. No milk with coffee and when I asked he brought me a mug to put it in and I went and got some from the buffet station.
The jam dispensers had no bowls to put it in and I had to put my plate under it.
When we came to check out we waited around for a member of staff to give our key to for quite a while there was no one at the reception desk and had to go in search of somebody.

Generally okay. Prior to going we booked a specific room - on arrival we were initially given a different room but then was changed to what we had requested. Not a problem but it could have been. Also no Prosecco in the room and had to ask several times over the two days. Arrived on a Sunday and the evening meal options was very limited having run out of many choices even though the Olde Bell was not that busy. Also, we had to pay for our meal as we went along rather than at the end of our stay, which seemed rather unusual. That said, the meal was good and the breakfast very good. Lastly our room was not cleaned during our two night stay and coffee tea not refreshed. I presume we should have requested it rather than presume it would be done. The staff were friendly and helpful but our overall impression was that with a little more attention to detail the Bell could be so much better. Hopefully our review has not been too critical as we did enjoy our short stay.

We stayed in the Malt House which is located next door to the Old Bell. Our room was very spacious with a nice view. No traffic noise. Lovely garden. The Inn was old and atmospheric. It had a lovely garden with plenty of seating.
It was a little chaotic in the restaurant as it was very busy, although the staff worked diligently we noticed some customers waited a long time for their desserts. We were pleased with our meals at dinner and breakfast, very good value for money. The free bottle of Prosecco was a welcome gift on arr8val.

Generally good, although they ran out of burgers early Friday evening. They had weddings both Fri & Sat, which meant the staff at breakfast were over stretched. Needed to employ someone to clear breakfast tables, replenish plates & orange juices. Our room certainly wasn’t luxury, like stated, although it was okay. Breakfast ... No greeting. No explanation or shown display of food.
We had to ask for plates, and also no marmalade or jams etc on display, which we had to ask for.
Jugs for hot water /coffee/tea not clearly written for a good sighted person to read on each jug.
My husband poorly sighted could not decipher the difference between each jug.
Juices had no labeling .
The food for breakfast, did not look appetizing. we were not offered alternative eggs, without asking.
This was disappointing, as the meal the evening before was very good.
No offer of help with luggage.
The room we chose , it was not explained that the steps could be difficult , to the next floor or within the room or any warning to take care.
We realised this is 11th century inn, and the style was as expected , but thought we would have been warned of safety issues.

The Olde Bell is a beautiful hotel near to Hurley lock. We booked through Travelzoo. The hotel is steeped in history parts of the walls were originally built by Monks about 1150. We had a lovely 1st floor room with super king bed & large ensuite We ate our evening meal there. The food was very tasty unfortunately the service from staff was very slow, I did comment to a couple of the staff about this. Best Western manage the hotel & have done for about a year. The hotel is owned by a couple of billionaire brothers.

I paid extra for a luxury room. Described as large with roll top bath in room. We were given room 6. It had a shower room with roll top bath. A small alcove had a set of drawers and a row of pegs with coat hangers. The small bedroom was up a flight of narrow stairs. This was not how I expected a luxury room to be. I explained this to reception and we were moved to room 8 which was perfect.
Food in the restaurant was very good and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Our only criticism of this hotel was the overpowering smell of cooking in all the areas of the hotel especially in our room( no. 4, ) which was above the kitchen. Whilst we appreciate that this is a very old hotel, we do feel that better
extraction facilities could be installed as this really made our stay unpleasant.

Its a lovely hotel. Very old and we had a great bedroom with a balcony. I think it comes to its own in summer, as would the garden. I have to say that bar drinks were expensive and the drink variety selection was very small but the free prosecco was welcome. The bathroom was large, clean and nicely decorated. We couldn't get the hot water to turn on in the shower but I think we may have been doing it wrong. It would be good to perhaps put instructions in the info sheet in the room about how to work the shower as well as a cheap disposable bath cap as the shower head is so high and angled that you get your hair wet whether you want it or not. Also perhaps check the sink soap dispenser as it wouldn't dispense. A cold shower was all we could manage but we managed. The breakfast buffet was very well stocked and the English breakfast looked good but we stuck to the buffet as it was filling.
Other Comments
I have read some of the more negative reviews for this site and most of them are a bit harsh. I don't think the food is good enough in quality or choices for a 5 star hotel but it was adequate. The staff were really good and I never saw any sign of them being unhelpful or unfriendly and the ridiculous remark about a waiter not being able to recommend wine was laughable. Sommeliers are sparse on the ground in most hotels unless we are talking The Ritz or similar! All in all we enjoyed our stay and there are a few niggles but not serious ones. Mainly it was mainly that the shower should be checked in room 2 as it was hard to use and the soap dispenser didn't work. There was only Earl Grey teabags in the drinks selection by the kettle but there was water available in tins which I've never encountered before and which not all hotels supply . As I said, just niggles. We would go back and explore it more in summer.

Thirdly the breakfast was very disappointing. The hot buffet was barely warm and the continental offering was left out in the open on a table with no refrigeration at all. We paid an extra £40 for a Deluxe room after the initial room just didn’t seem clean. The Deluxe room lacked many basic necessities ie no soap dispenser beside the bath - the only mirror was in the bathroom so not even a vanity mirror near a socket for make up or hair preparation. The ‘travel’ hair dryer was not fit for purpose as it switched off after over heating within a few seconds. The buffet breakfast was of poor quality as was the cutlery and crockery. They were obviously short staffed and those who were in attendance just did not seem in any way motivated.

It was very expensive for food and drink and whilst the offer said 20% off food, the hotel wanted to charge a 12.5% discretionary service. The Olde Bell is very nice, has a very large beer garden, a restaurant area and bar area and lounge. Staff were welcoming, however, unless you request it they do not service the rooms during your stay. This wasn't a problem for us as only there for two nights, but we did have to go to reception to request, more tea, coffee milk etc as rooms not serviced.
We had a deluxe room, which was very large, so plenty of room, however we found the lighting a bit strange as only one bedside lamp and this was situated next to 2 wall lights over the dressing table. We tried to move the lamp to the other side of the bed, however the sockets were blanked off so this was impossible. Also the bathroom, didn't have an obscured window so the blind (which had seen better days) had to be closed at all times as we were on the
ground floor.
Breakfast was ok, but cooked and put into the keep warm containers, as was all the hot water, coffee etc (in flasks), sadly this reflected in the food and drink quality. We did have an evening meal in the restaurant on the first evening which was nice, but service very slow. It appears that they were perhaps a bit short of staff, which is a shame. Overall despite my grumblings we did enjoy our stay

We had a great time. There was plenty of room to park and that was free. The breakfasts were self service but really tasty and the room was very spacious and quiet.

Lovely oldie worldie hotel. Full of character. Beautiful gardens to enjoy a relaxed drink and eat alfresco.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Delicious food. Pretty surrounding area and lovely walks along the river close by. Really enjoyed 2 days away with our friends.

We were allocated room 3 which is large and sparsely furnished. Note bed side table wobbly. Window out to the side of the building and I thinkclose to kitchen extractor fan which was audible . The bed was comfortable but given the size of the room a comfy chair would be a welcome addition. Shower room is large white and clean. The shower controls are easy to use.
We had an evening meal on the first night. Food was substantial , presentation could be improved. All the staff were friendly and helpful. It was excellent value for money.
Other Comments
Hurley is very small so no village to spend time in although the river walk was pleasant, pity the river bridge is closed so we did not walk into Marlow.
Large garden is relaxing and the kitchen garden adds interest. Large car park is good to have.
Breakfast provides enough choices but the hot plates did not keep the food hot enough.
Overall a great stay

Bedroom was nothing like the pic advertised. I would like to add a comment about your staff Alex behind the bar was excellent made us feel very welcome.. more people like him need to work there .. also can I add breakfast was appalling my wife only had a slice of toast I tried the buffet breakfast but this wasn’t good ended up leaving it the orange juice was warmer than the breakfast. I appreciate that breakfast was part of the deal I can honestly say that if it hadn’t been I would of refused to pay so disappointed with what was supposed to be a great night away

The standard of food was unacceptable the evening meal was spoilt by the length of time we waited 45 mins before anyone took our order in the end we had a cold starter and told them not to bother with our main as this was now an hour and half later

Very pleasant, evening meals were excellent, could have been greater choice for breakfast. Garden looked just the place to enjoy lunch in the sunshine. Hurley was a quiet backwater, but close to Henley and Marlow.
Other Comments
Room was generously proportioned ground floor in new building, but windows looking directly onto adjacent car park. If staying again would request a first floor room.
Room wasn’t cleaned in the three days we were there, despite sign in bathroom saying if you want towels changed leave them on shower floor. On enquiring at check out we’re told it is their policy not to clean rooms unless asked, which we should have been told at check in - which we weren’t. If this is their policy there should be a notice in each room explaining this, rather than relying on receptionist to tell customers.

A very well presented and quiet luxury room, very friendly team members and good food. Lovely, quiet village location 5 minutes from the Thames. Plenty of places nearby to visit. We definitely recommend this character hotel.

The hotel seemed to run out of some food and drinks they had on the menus.
The Staff all though very pleasant were very young and could do with training which I think would improve the service
Also there seemed to be no room service so nothing was stocked up I.e tea making facilities and bathroom accessories

Very friendly staff, easily checked and were expected as Travelzoo guests.
Due to hotel being busy breakfast was chaotic, running out of everything ( drinks, plates, cutlery and food), so had to wait. Next day was much more pleasant as hotel it so full.
One complaint, outside areas of hotel could be cleaner, our balcony was too dirty to sit out on.
Not much else in Hurley 1 pub besides the hotel.

The lack of staff, as our evening meal we had to wait ages for our order to be taken & we had to catch a member of staff as they were running past! Breakfast wasn't worth £16.95 as there was only Rice Krispies & melon, a lot of the hot breakfast had under cooked sausage, over cooked bacon & warm omelettes, dinner was totally over priced even with 20% off, other pub down the road was excellent value

Evening meal. We were looking forward to this as we had checked the menu online and the choice was good. We were given this menu and had made our choice only to find that it was taken away from us and replaced with the lunch menu. We were told that this menu would replace the dinner menu. The choices on this menu were fewer, less interesting and more expensive! There was nothing that I wanted to eat so we left and ate elsewhere so missed out on our 20% off the bill which was included in our Travelzoo offer. We then discovered that the lady on the next table had ordered a burger from the lunch menu but had been given the burger from the dinner menu which had cheese and bacon added which she did not want.

Lovely old hotel. Nice ambience and Comfortable but a bit cold in the dining room. The food was good and the breakfast was excellent, however, of the 5 starters for dinner, 3 were not available. We were in lovely room 1, but there was a continuous droning noise until late in the evening and early in the morning. Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The bar was a bit lacking in its service and there was no whiskey as it was being used at another event. There were no crisps or peanuts available either, a small point but disappointing nevertheless . The gardens are lovely and the staff are friendly. Overall a nice break and good value for money.

It was okay overall however I feel the place is resting on it's laurels and is a bit tired. Some staff okay others a bit disinterested room was billed as deluxe but more standard in my opinion little touches missing initial supply of tea etc a bit stingy although request for more was met well enough
Would definitely revisit, however our roo. Was lovely, massive bed, but the shower was terrible, very low pressure and it was a disabled shower, no space whatsoever, not sure how someone disabled would manage in such a tight space? Also the room needed a mirror, somewhere for wife to do her hair and makeup. Breakfast was nice, but on first morning. Very disjointed, had to wait quite a while for stuff to be replenished, no scrambled egg, sausages or hash browns, drinks are expensive.

The restaurant for breakfast was chaotic on the first morning with no explanation of how things worked ,seemed understaffed and breakfast items were not replenished when running low which resulted in you having breakfast in stages. 2nd morning was much better.
Evening meal on the 1st night was very nice meals were well cooked and piping hot and the service was
great, 2nd night was a let down as the meal my wife had was served with instant mashed potatoes and watery mashed sweed ! Not the sort of thing you would expect from this class of restaurant.
The waiter did apologise, change the meal and not charge us which was very appreciated, but again the service was very underwhelming and chaotic. There didn't seem to be enough staff in the restaurant and the chap serving us appeared to be under a lot of pressure.

Could be very good but high turnover of staff (who work hard with a smile) drags the Olde Belle down. Some menu items were a fantasy…not available. Those that were had mixed results, some delicious, some poor. Bedroom was good and well equipped. Parking was close and easy.

It’s a pub cum hotel. Very large gardens are attractive to the large number of caravans campers nr Hurley so be prepared for noisy non stayers during the day.
The hotel is very well located for nearby NT properties e.g. Hughenden, Greys Court and Nuffield Place.

Several things, small but important, lack of refreshments in room : only 2 teabags & two milk cartons, 1 tester tube size of shower gel for 2 people, toilet roll holder broken, bulbs in lights missing etc. We had a meal in the restaurant which took nearly 1 hr to come from kitchen.

Tried to walk to Marlow on route advised but path is shut due to unsafe bridge.
Only had one night, plenty to do in area so recommend 2 nights.
