"We throughly enjoyed our recent stay at the Feathers Hotel. We had a lovely welcome from the staff at reception. Our room was warm, clean and comfortable. The food was delicious and the service overall excellent"
There are almost 500 listed buildings in Ludlow. With its "incredible Jacobean facade" (The Daily Telegraph) the hotel is among the most recognisable.
The property was built in the 17th century. It has feather motifs adorned on its exterior, a tribute to the Prince of Wales.
Use your dinner credit in the Plume@Feathers restaurant, recently awarded an AA Rosette.
Learn about the town's history at Ludlow Museum, Ludlow Castle, and St Laurence's Church. They are all approximately five minutes' walk from hotel.
The hotel is five minutes' drive from the borders of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape.
For panoramic views over the castle and town make for the Whitcliffe Common Nature Reserve. It is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel. The town is also a great base from which to explore The Welsh Marches.

There were problems with the restaurant both for dinner and breakfast - there had been a Christmas function in another part of the hotel and this seemed to take preference over the hotels actual guests. Several guests waited in excess of half an hour for restaurant service on the evening and for breakfast guests were asked to specify precise times for their breakfast - not particularly what you want when on a break. Staff seemed very stretched - have noticed a decline in service over the past several years we have been going to the hotel. This will be our last stay.

Hotel decor was old fashioned and was like something from the 70's, shabby, drab colours and very uninspiring (despite the hotel being refurbished not too long ago). Not at all inkeeping with the outside of the hotel. I expected rich red curtains and carpets, leather chairs and chintzy cushions. There were no comfy chairs - all hard bucket chairs. Chipped paintwork in the bedroom and hall ways, cheap bedroom curtains and tatty bed throws. The hotel lounge and dining room was very very cold throughout my stay. The log fire kept going out and staff didn't bother to do anything about it - I had to keep asking.......and even then they weren't able to make a decent fire and it went out. Christmas decorations were very poor indeed, no Christmas atmosphere or twinkling lights. Staff were ok but weren't overly friendly or made you feel particularly welcome. They were clearly there to "do a job" and get paid. Food was average at best. The overall visit was very disappointing and quite frankly embarrassing as I'd taken my elderly mother there as a Christmas present. I certainly won't ever consider returning or recommending this hotel. They need to take a look at the Lygon Arms and Broadway Hotel in Broadway.......that's how the interior should decorated in an old property.

The staff were friendly and helpful, especially the housekeeping personnel. And our complaints about the food were dealt with positively and politely by the management.
Obviously, staying in such an historic place has its own charm and we liked the overall atmosphere.
Other Comments
The room was very cramped - yes, we were on a deal break but didn’t realise the ‘cosy’ room would be quite so small. Also, the bathroom extractor fan was very loud and noisy.
The evening meal was ok but not value for money - £24 for a very small piece of fish was not impressive. And the so-called chocolate mousse for dessert was rock solid and not an enjoyable experience.
This was followed by breakfast the following morning where my wife’s boiled egg arrived completely solid. Having decided to go for a poached egg instead we waited for about 10 minutes before finding out that the order had been forgotten.
Friends of ours have stayed before and found the food and service excellent - we feel we were unfortunate that the kitchen didn’t deliver its normal standard for some reason.

We have stayed here previously & love the central location.
We upgraded to a deluxe super king room ,(212) which was lovely. Right at the front of the hotel with 2 big bay windows. The bathroom was very clean & warm, unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for the room. When we returned from dinner the room was quite chilly but as we were going to bed it wasn’t so bad. However, it was cool again in the morning, the radiators were cold. I did mention this when we checked out & it was noted.
Dinner was very nice, but service was slow. Good choice of breakfast, I had smoked salmon &scrambled egg, which was lovely, my husband ordered full English breakfast. Again the service was slow, when it came it was all
overcooked, but as we’d waited so long he ate what he could.
Despite these issues we would return to the Feathers as the good points outweighed the bad.

When we arrived at 4.25 the only option for dinner on the first night was 8.30 which we felt was late. Chose to take our meal credits on our second night at 7.30. We were told that the only free slots for breakfast on the first day were 7.30 or 7.45. We felt this was unacceptable given that we were enjoying a relaxing break! Negotiations finally allowed us breakfast at 9.15 and 9.00. When settling our bill we noticed we were overcharged by £60 When we queried this we were told that the £30pp allowance only applied to dinner on the first night!!! Further negotiations have led us to believe that a refund will be forthcoming! Fingers crossed!!!

Unfortunately. There was confusion when we booked in. The booking was made by our friend John Paul Gibbs. They arrived prior to us. When we arrived, the receptionist couldn't find a booking for us. However finally allocated a room, 107. Due to my husbands walking issues this proved diifgicult to negotiate.
Fortunately the House keeper was able to allocate another room. It was the disabled room.
We do not really need to book a room of this standard, but need easy access.
However, the problem was resolved. I would like to say 107 was a nicer room, just the getting to and fro wasthe issue.

One thing that does need improving is the speed of service in the restaurant, far too slow. For example replenishing food, juice and cutlery at the self service breakfast.

I expected lots of original features inside the hotel and there were not. The bedroom was supposed to be delux and it was not, The restaurant was not very good, the breakfast was lacking fresh fruit, they often ran out or croissants, the orange juice was awful, one packet of biscuits per room per day, this should have been one each and there car park was inadequate for the number of rooms. I carry a disabled passenger so it was not an option for me to park on the outskirts of town so we did not go out for fear of not being able to park the car.

We had room 133, we had a horrendous noise which we think may have been from an extractor fan in the kitchen, even with the window closed it was very loud, I was unable to get to sleep until it stopped (around 10.45 pm ) and I was woken by it at 5.45am. I wouldn’t want anyone else taking up your offer to be given that room or any other room affected by this noise.
Also my husband ordered a sirloin steak (£31) asked it to be medium/rare, it came very nearly raw and with gristle running through it, he managed to cut away the gristle and he did eat it, I couldn’t have eaten it……when the waitress asked if everything was ok, my husband explained the issue and said don’t worry 8 have eaten what I could. She came back and said she had spoken to the chef and he (only him) could have a free coffee…..we felt that was a pittance, they would have been better offering nothing….

Great 17thC hotel. Obviously modernised. Excellent dinner on the first night which was from a set menu with choices as part of the travel zoo deal. This was excellent they obviously have a good chef/ kitchen staff
2nd night was a La carte and this too was very good. I had an unusual choice chicken and girolles suet pudding with some creamed potato and carrot. This was much better than it sounds. !! We were so full that we couldn’t manage dessert. I should have mentioned cheese and rather special biscuits on the first nigh. Worcestershire gold delicious. Breakfasts were very good just the right quantity. Great local sausage . Only minor criticism, we had Côtes du Rhône (£30) on the first night. Not very smooth. We then had chilean Merlot on the second night (£25). Also not very smooth. But really this didn’t distract from two excellent dinners!!
Young staf we’re great particularly a young manager(?) called Grace. She was an absolute bundle of energy and was everywhere when needed. She was very friendly and welcoming —a great asset to this hotel!!

Not dirty but the cleaner they use is not suitable for wooden tables. Change the cleaner or put cloths on tables please.

We tagged this on to a much longer holiday, using it as an interim stop off point en route. The entry to the car park was blocked by a vehicle unloading, so we pulled in opposite and waited for the men to finish. When we entered the car park it was already full and there was little room to manoevre so we could get out. The very helpful receptionist directed us to a nearby Council car park which was about five minutes walk from the hotel. We decided to use that car park for the duration of our stay, saving on the £7.50 per night charged by the Feathers for parking.

It is a beautiful period hotel with friendly staff and excellent food. Room was great - but the lift was out of order, and this would have made it difficult for any guest who had mobility issues. We enjoyed our evening meal on the first night but thought it was over-priced so the £30 per person allowance in the Travelzoo offer was inadequate and we paid an additional £11. But for this we might not have looked for somewhere else to eat on the second night.

Don’t be fooled by the tired looking frontage to this hotel. Inside is high standard and interesting for such an old historic building. Creaky floors and long passages and ‘hidden’ rooms added to its charm. Would definitely recommend a stay there.

Lovely hotel with bags of character, the breakfast was good quality and plentiful, the service was very slow in taking the cooked order, the evening meal was of good quality and plentiful. The wines were extremely expensive and at £6 a bottle of water it’s best to ask for tap. One of our 3 nights the room service was abysmal the bed was not made ,the coffee sachets were not replenished and the mini fridge was not replenish, fortunately we must have had a different room service person on the last two nights and room was perfect.

I think if you are a patron of the hotel they should provide FREE parking at £7.50 that’s very expensive as the public parking behind the hotel is £4.80 for 24hours

Generally the package was good, however the experience in the restaurant at dinner and breakfast could have been better.
At dinner, after being encouraged to have a look at the desert menu, after waiting 25 minutes to see it, we had to request it from another member of staff.
At breakfast we were served a cup of instant coffee and not the advertised caffetier with no explanation.
These may just be staff training issues.

I am not a breakfast person so look for fruit and yogurt. Only yogurt on offer was natural. Good choice of Danish on offer, underside needed to be reheated on a metal tray ideally. Bacon undercooked for my liking, but good choice on offer, if you like a cooked breakfast.
Room had a fridge and fan, which was nice as it was very warm when we stayed
Bathroom and bedroom adequate
Bathroom door when opened, a little close to toilet for my liking
Bedding adequate
Room was a little masculine for my taste

Food quality did not match the prices being charged. English breakfast was tiny, 1 egg, 1 hard rasher of streaky bacon, 1 sausage, 1/2 a piece of black pudding (crescent not round), 1 small pot of beans ( same pot size a brown sauce was served in), 5 mushrooms, 1 hash brown and 1/2 a tomato. For this they were charging £12.95 (£14.95 for non guests). The man in charge of breakfast service was rude towards the waitresses, did not say please or thank you when asking them to clear tables.
Tables were very sticky.

The Hotel is very nice and although they are dog friendly, we felt a little out of it, not allowed in the restaurant with our dog and put in another room away from the restaurant. So by the time our food arrived it wasn’t very hot. Our room was at the back of the hotel and although very nice, we had the kitchen extractor fans running from early morning until 10:30ish at night.

The staff were very pleasant and welcoming and professional, except on our first morning when we came down to breakfast. One of the young servers gave us both and the dog a dirty look as though we shouldn’t be there. Felt a little uncomfortable.

Food. I had to return my food twice. Chips were burnt time, chips raw next time and fish smelt awful. 5 tables returned their food for a variety of reasons, one had plastic piece in fish. Breakfast was smoked bacon which I don’t like, and it was streaky bacon! Thought this was a decent hotel. Sausages way to strong taste of herbs. Left most of it. Clearly buying less quality food and serving cheap food to those on a voucher

Stayed for 3 nights in January - we couldn't ask for anymore (other than a free carpark and a gym!) but the hotel was refurbished beautifully, the room was lovely (and quiet), the restaurant areas were relaxing, food was good - including the best roast dinner we have both ever had, staff were friendly and efficient and it was right in the mix of the town.
The building was stunning, as was all of Ludlow, with lots of lovely walks to do, plenty of choice for good eating and local shops.

Enjoyed most but, having ordered a coffee from the bar and it being presented at my table the barman had spilt quite a lot of the coffee into the saucer and instead of apologising proceeded to place some tissue on the table and tell me to mop it up.
The rest of the staff were very helpful and pleasant.
The room was excellent, very clean and well appointed, the bathroom was new and spotless with really nice fluffy towels.
The evening meal although slow to be served the main course was of a very high standard.
Breakfast was exceptional with all that you could possible require from the continental table to a well presented cooked breakfast.
Parking is tight if you arrive when most of the parking places are being used.
There was a slight hick up on departing when paying the bill but was quickly sorted.

Room seemed very warm didn’t need radiator on ..this was December.Breakfast had everything you wanted Continental and cook to order hot dishes…evening meal given £30 each off your evening meal on first night..car park first come first served basis …but there is a very large council car park within 5 mins walk which we were directed to and no problems leaving car there.
Ludlow is a lovely place to stay …also Hereford and Shrewsbury are also worth visiting…will return spring /summer as plenty of walking routes are available.

THEY HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE BREAKFAST SERVICE AND QUALITY.
Had to wait 30/40minutes for cooked meal and when it arrived it was minimal and so overcooked that the bacon and black pudding were inedible.
It was certainly not worth £12.95. I did not ask to be refunded but on checking out had not been charged for two breakfasts

Good food (breakfast and dinner) , though evening menu a little limited. Parking available if in good time. Room a bit dusty - could do with a good vacuum in drawers and to side of wardrobe. Bed a bit dipped and window faced a wall. However, shower room a good size and room fairly recently refurbished and warm when it was very cold outside. Nice to have shortbread and chocolate drink sachets on the tray.

We went to The Feathers Hotel with a Travelzoo deal. We feel that, as we were on a deal, we were allocated a room overlooking the car park. Also, whilst the room did have a queen bed, it was small and cramped. The furniture, ie. the wardrobe in particular, was tatty and certainly had seen better days. The throw over the bed was bobbled with loads of pulled threads and very old (not very hygenic looking) and we put it away in the tatty wardrobe. Our room was not serviced on our second day and we made the bed ourself. We thought that perhaps this is what you get when you go to The Feathers on a deal.

The public rooms in particular were cold and somewhat unwelcoming, this extended to the restaurant for our evening meal, the food was ok but served on cold plates in a cold room was not ideal. Breakfast was very nice if a little slow; by this time we were well wrapped up.

Restaurant and bar food excellent, service a bit slow, but perhaps we needed to slow down being in Shropshire. Ludlow like most towns today is losing the larger shops, but small retailers are surviving well, and the market is a buzz of activity with good products to buy.

Easily found on the high street.
Check in was easy with a card being opened for any extras.
On the deal we dined in the hotel restaurant with a credit which covered both of us for a three course meal. This was hot and tasty, with the wait between course acceptable for the quality of the food.
Breakfast was self serve except for your choice of hot food. A good selection of fruit, yoghurt, cereals, pastries and toast. Once tea and coffee had been received , hot choices were taken and once again a wait until it was received. It was good quality and reasonably hot.
We ate out in Marlow the other two evenings and didn't use the bar area.
The room was spacious and at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park. Iron, ironing board, hairdryer and tea tray with biscuits are provided. A can of still and sparkling water in the fridge.
A lift to floors is available but there are stairs and uneven floors to negotiate.
The car park takes approximately 20 cars as some are used by staff. This is 7.50 a day. If you leave there is no guarantee you will get a space later. On road is £2.00 per hour from 8am until 6pm. Alternatively larger car parks are £4.50 for the day. The stay was great. Staff were very hard working, especially dealing with some guest requests at breakfast.
Other Comments
The history, architecture and furniture in the building is impressive.
I found it to be kept uncomfortably hot, especially if your table was close to the toaster at breakfast. Simply opening the window above it would be a solution.
Drinks are very expensive. We had a large red and a large white wine at dinner and it was £25.00!! There are lots of pubs minutes walk away from the hotel that can be used instead. Alot of shops are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Off season most seem to close at 4pm.
Marlow is a great place to visit. People are so friendly and helpful. It's the kind of place where you a greeted with a "good morning" when you enter a shop. A smile and a thank you as you leave. It's very much worth a visit to the hotel and the local area.

Lovely historic hotel, well situated in the centre of Ludlow, just a short stroll to the market place, museum and castle. Hotel has a carpark at a reasonable extra charge.
Our bedroom was a good size, with a very comfortable bed. The adjoining bathroom was also large, but would have benefited from secondary glazing as it was only heated by a towel rail and was quite chilly. One point that detracted a little, was that it wasn't actually situated in the main hotel, but was over adjacent shops and was consequently quite a trek along corridors and stairs to get to it! Not good if you're not too mobile and this should be made plain at time of booking on your website. The hotel staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Breakfast and dinner offerings were great, with a good selection of well cooked quality food in a pleasant dining room.
Overall, inspite of one or two niggles, this is a great place to stay for a few nights.
Other Comments
Having recently stayed at your hotel, we would like to thank your staff for making a pleasant stay. We'd also like to thank you for some lovely, well prepared food.
Just a couple of niggles, our bedroom 108, could do with secondary glazing in the bathroom. It only has a towel rail to heat it and was quite chilly at times. It's also quite a distance from a lift along corridors and stairs. Not good if you're elderly or infirm. This should be mentioned by reception when checking in. We forgot to mention when checking out, that there is a leak in the ceiling in one part of the corridor which was dripping water when we passed through and needs immediate attention.
However, overall we enjoyed our stay a would certainly like to return a some future date.

A group booking for 9 in restaurant.
Initially everything went well food was good and so was service but things went downhill when it came to sorting the bills out for 3 couples. At first we were given a group bill and had we paid that the hotel would have been about £150 out of pocket! We tried to explain what the problem was and how we wished to pay and we had 4 different bills for one couple before it was correct. This was due to the fact that the person doing the billing just did not listen to what was being said she became very loud and borderline officious. As the person who had made the booking I was quite embarrassed by the way she dealt with my friends. My bill was to be paid the next day as I stayed the night, and I asked that she would check my bill so there was no confusion the next day. Unfortunately she didn’t do that and on checking out I had to explain the problem of the billing on the previous lunchtime.

Great hotel and good location, our wine wasn’t in the room on arrival but no issues when I collected it from the bar, car park is tight, food was ok in the restaurant, breakfast was a nice just needed to be more of it.

The food was delicious at the Feathers and the staff went out of their way to be helpful, even moving their car to allow a space to be available.

Beautiful Hotel in a central area within walking distance to all shops and cafe/pubs. Staff so friendly especially Amber Alison and Joe. They couldn’t do enough to make our stay memorable.

On checking in we found we had no heating in our bedroom, despite asking for it to be resolved every day nothing was done. Loaned a fan heater, but that was no help with cold and damp bathroom. On querying our final bill we were given a £15 discount !!

We booked a delux room which was excellent with a very nice modern en suite. Only criticism was that the windows didn't open and had lots of dead flies on the woodwork, and there was no extractor fan, so no ventilation. Reported to reception on leaving.

Good food and bar at reasonable prices.

Negatives: meal portions very small, wine in room was very average quality for £25, £5 charge for parking

Pleasant staff on the evening. Breakfast staff looked way too stressed. Too many people at the same time even though you were offered a time for breakfast.
Evening food very expensive for what you got although the food was tasty. The bill was too confusing when coming to pay. Needs to be more straight forward. Bed comfy, no fridge in our room. Otherwise a lovely stay.

Very old traditional hotel on main street in Ludlow. Very tiny car park which was hard to negotiate. Lots of different levels but one lift.
Seemed short of staff as service was patchy. Restaurant was very traditional and dark, food was OK but pricey for what was served. Good breakfast but strict booking system! Ee had deluxe room, which was well equipped and large. Modern bathroom.
Deal was expensive but included some food.

Would be good to make parking easier…..we understand that space is limited and the public car park is nearby but why not explain in advance and give location of the library car park?? At the end of a long journey being prepared for the options would minimise frustration

Lovely welcome on arrival and able to check into our room early. Lovely room, and bed and bathroom. Sloping floors but added to the affect of an old building. Timing of the heating might of been better but overall an enjoyable stay.

Very friendly attentive staff, food was excellent and prepared freshly for each individual, Qur room was clean and comfortable.
Other Comments
The only drawbacks were that the room overlooked the main road and bin men and delivery men were making a huge noise from 6 a.m. The breakfast service was slow, but that was because everything was prepared freshly.

Although the entrance lobby and stairs look a little tired, ( it is a wonderfully ancient building) however our deluxe double was newly refurbished with a super en-suite shower. Huge very comfy bed, very clean everywhere.
The breakfast was up with the best, and the one evening meal was delicious. Al staff helpful and friendly. Great Travelzoo deal too.

When planning bathroom please think about an alternative low wattage light so as to gently light the bathroom at night, without having to switch on the bright light & fan. Also please make sure there is a well illuminated mirror near a socket for hair drying - so 2 small adverse comments to your designers, not your staff.
