Staff were very friendly. General areas nicely decorated. Food was very average and dinner was disappointing. Room had a noisy generator outside that spoiled the peace and the view was not good . If we stayed again I’d request a room facing the square. Well located for parking and main town shops, pubs etc.

Allocate better rooms if available.

First room allocated no heating working on a cold December afternoon. 2 calls and 1 visit to reception no joy. I phoned head office and within mins the hotel and reception manager were at my door, within 10 mins we were moved into another, warm room. Unsure how long this would have taken if I hadn’t involved their head office?

A warm characteristic hotel which one can imagine being back in time when it was built. Well located in the square, so near the shops, restaurants and pubs.

We had an evening meal that was good value for 3 courses for £22, even if it was sparse! The breakfast menu had a lot of choices but some of the food trays were not hot. I also had a hot chocolate in the bar one evening that was not hot, and when I asked for it to be heated up, the young man had an attitude that felt negative! Other than that, the staff were welcoming and professional.

Car parking was stressful and we got a parking ticket which was annoying. Rather have free parking and cost of car park added to cost of hotel stay.

Lovely hotel and great staff. Clean and very well presented. Lovely interior. Comfortable and well appointed lounge with large comfy sofas and various seating areas. £10 hotel carpark for 24 hrs parking, which we knew in advance. Nice food in the bar, same as the restaurant where breakfast is served which was also very tasty. The Square outside the hotel is within reach of shops and a chemist. Lovely place to stay.

Staff were very helpful and cautious. Hotel was clean, rooms good size but lighting in bedroom very poor. Bathroom very small but adequate. Car park should be included in b&b price, as £10 for 24hrs on top of room rate was unreasonable. Breakfast was varied and good. Hotel was in walking distance to all amenities.

Our twin room only had one bedside light which made it difficult to read in bed. The room was not serviced during the day, no beds made, no tea or milk replenished. We asked for a second lamp but we're told they were all in use.

Really nice hotel, perfect location for shops and attractions. Nice comfortable room, superb breakfast
Other Comments
our room was in the newer part of the hotel, however there are smaller rooms in the original part of the hotel if you want the historical experience. The cleaning of the bathroom could have been better i.e used razor and shower gel left in room when went in: and also the bed making looked a bit rushed

Lovely, old hotel with beautiful public rooms. The room was clean and comfortable but needed a bit of updating. Car park charge was a bit steep at £10 a day and the car park is a short walk from the entrance up a cobbled lane. Not ideal when its pouring with rain. Rooms are only made up on request so you have to ask for additional tea, coffee etc. Towels are nice and fluffy. The restaurant was excellent for breakfast and evening meals. The tapas was very good. Being in the town centre there is plenty of shops and restaurants around. The bus station is 5 minutes away. The staff are super friendly and helpful.

Unlike at the Surya in Colchester, the breakfast service was not as good - it was all self-service and the only option on egg was fried - overwarmed and rubbery whether we arrived for breakfast early or late. The suited manager strutting about would have done better to roll up his sleeves and properly help out during breakfast imho. Late Saturday night there was a lot of pub noise from next door.

The Ladies on Reception were always smiling and very helpful. The breakfast ladies were great too. The bedroom was clean altho a bit tired, bathroom door and architrave looked rough. Plenty of hot water, 2 large and 2 small towels, comfy bed. The food at breakfast was great, all self service, sausages, beans, eggs, bacon etc, copious amounts of tea and coffee, so many cereals, then yogurts, fresh fruit, pan o chocolat and croissants. The usual very slow toaster, once round half toaster, twice round it's burnt!.

The breakfast ladies, those in the back keeping the warming trays full. Reception ladies, esp Claire.

Perfect location, with parking to the rear, at £10 for 24hrs. Other car parks are available close by, but parking in Tuesday Market Place expensive. Went to an evening with Kerry Ellis at the Corn Exchange opposite to the hotel. A good place to stay if visiting the area.

We were offered 20% discount on meals in the hotel, which we took advantage of. Risotto poor, but other meals were excellent. Rooms similar to Premier Inn, nowhere to hang towels and shower drains slow to clear - but fabulous value for money!
