"Old building but quite noisy at night and from rooms above us. Very slow breakfast service and wrong order received and not rectified so disappointing."

More Reasons to Go

  • The George Hotel is a 500-year-old coaching inn that combines period features with modern touches. Expect exposed beams and sash windows juxtaposed with arty murals.
  • The hotel has a bar, a lounge, and a restaurant with a Moroccan-themed courtyard. There's also a Victorian-themed tea room, T at The George (supplements apply).
  • Colchester is said to be Britain's oldest city. Learn about the city's history at Colchester Castle. The 1000-year-old Norman keep houses a museum that covers more than 2500 years of history. It is less than five minutes' walk from the hotel.
  • Dedham Vale National Landscape is 20 minutes’ drive north in Constable Country. The River Stour, Flatford Mill, and Dedham Vale feature in famous paintings by John Constable.
  • Drive 20 minutes south to explore Mersea Island. West Mersea Beach is lined with colourful beach huts. Try the Colchester native oysters—a delicacy that has been harvested here since Roman times.

Great stay in this historic hotel. If you love old buildings this will suit you. Lovely room. Pleasant staff. Wonderful evening meal. Convenient location for town and castle.

My only criticism is it was a bit too cool to relax in the downstairs seating areas as the windows and doors were all open. It was only April.

A well located hotel with so much atmosphere and ambience. There are plenty choices of eating and drinking places nearby, which is a bonus. The staff were helpful and friendly, the breakfast was superb!

Very helpful and friendly staff (in the main). Breakfast was good and plentiful. Rooms spacious and clean.

The receptionist on our arrival could have handled our checkin a little better, in our opinion. We mentioned a request that had been made on booking where we had asked for a bit of leniency around breakfast. As Travelzoo customers we felt she was treating us differently (in a demeaning sort of way). We have enjoyed flexibility in many of our Travelzoo stays in the past so it was unexpected given we had had a conversation on booking and via email about our request.
