TravelZoo made it a good value for money experience. Staff friendly, rooms clean. My yes replies would happen if it was a same deal.

as a senior citizen I missed the absence of any printed instructions e.g. how to use the fiercely digitalised room phone - I couldn't even contact reception. Same in bathroom - frustrating effort trying to work out the taps - over shower
Genererally felt more staff training needed

Great stay in this historic hotel. If you love old buildings this will suit you. Lovely room. Pleasant staff. Wonderful evening meal. Convenient location for town and castle.

My only criticism is it was a bit too cool to relax in the downstairs seating areas as the windows and doors were all open. It was only April.

The receptionist on our arrival could have handled our checkin a little better, in our opinion. We mentioned a request that had been made on booking where we had asked for a bit of leniency around breakfast. As Travelzoo customers we felt she was treating us differently (in a demeaning sort of way). We have enjoyed flexibility in many of our Travelzoo stays in the past so it was unexpected given we had had a conversation on booking and via email about our request.

Off hand service ,room was at a distance from reception up several flights of stairs no offer made to carry luggage no water, biscuits or fridge in room dirty bath towel left from previous guest on back of bathroom door. Paid extra £100 for feature room plus £24 parking so all in all £263 for 2 nights b&b quite expensive not value for money

Nice room, great bed and very comfortable only let down by the lack of attention to detail with the cleaning. I have to stress that neither the room or general hotel was dirty but the paint splash up the bathroom door, paint drops on carpet and very dusty bottom of the stair banister were noticeable.
We ate evening meal the first night which was fantastic. Breakfast was great quality although service shambolic on the first morning. All together a lovely stay, would recommend although beware the £25 plus you’ll need to spend for two nights car parking

The Staff were very friendly, the room we had was very clean and tidy although the hanging space for cloths was a little short in length and you could not hang a full length dress in there.
Other Comments
The Room we had was right next to the kitchen extraction fans which were noisy. These were switched off at 21:00 hours therefore not a problem when going to sleep however, they were switched back on around 06:00 which did wake us up. The main issue however, was that the window in the room was "frosted" thereby you could not see out of it. When we opened the window we could see the reason why, the extraction fans were right outside it.
This is the second time we have used Travelzoo for short city breaks and both times have ended up in rooms next to the extraction fans. Perhaps these rooms are reserved for Travelzoo guest?? We will most likely think twice before booking with Travelzoo again.

It was a very enjoyable stay. We were given a room with a shower over the bath when I had asked for a walk in shower. However Joey on the desk was very happy to swap it over for us. He was most polite and helpful on reception.

Lovely accommodation and attentive staff except let down a little at breakfast times - lacking attention to detail - had to chase to get order taken and couple opposite had to remind staff member their order hadn’t been taken too. (Not many couples in there) - around 9am so maybe ‘rush’ was over?
Basic breakfast menu. Nice veggie sausage though.

Hotel is lovely, staff brilliant, food very good, rooms very comfy, Spencer in the restaurant served us both night and was excellent, although all the staff we met couldn’t do enough for you.
Other Comments
Parking although we did manage to get parking space on both nights, the car park isn’t big and we got the last space available, it’s a public car park so no guarantees you’ll get parked, Colchester was a nightmare to navigate as so many roads closed, temporary lights and massive tailbacks. The town itself doesn’t have much within walking distance although you are in the middle of the town a few shops and bars. The George is an absolute bargain at this price,
