"We really enjoyed our 2 night stay at the New Inn, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Caris (or Karis) on reception/bar/cream teas was really lovely."
Set into a cleft on North Devon's coastline, Clovelly is a historic landmark. It continues to preserve its fishing village heritage.
A scenic path winds down from the top of the 400-foot cliff. Stroll along whitewashed cottages to the quay with views of the Atlantic.
The New Inn was built in the 17th century and is halfway down Clovelly's cobbled hill. It has 11 rooms, some of which have balconies.
The village served as a shooting location for "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society".

I'll start by saying the staff were lovely, and did their best, and Clovelly is as gorgeous as ever despite a lot of building work, scaffolding and banging and crashing this summer. However, this formerly lovely and characterful hotel is now on its uppers, and desperately in need of refurbishment. It certainly wasn't worth what we paid, even at Travelzoo rates. Rooms are woefully grubby, as was our kettle, and showers/baths are just about adequate. Paint is peeling off walls and window frames (we had to ask for another room as it was depressingly dusty and unmaintained), the inner lock on our bathroom was falling off and there were extensive spiders' webs on our filthy balcony (though our eventual room was tiny, so we were very glad to have it). Additionally, and while our dog enjoyed her breakfast sausage, hygiene was lacking at breakfast (sliced breads remained in their supermarket plastic bags, which everyone put their hands in - ugh)! We went for a much-needed break, but were actually relieved to get home. So disappointed.

Had a lovely couple of days here...We had room 2 which had the most amazing views...No problem with the rest of the room..yes the place is a little tired..But I feel if the owners actually cared about the place they could so much to improve the hotel..Food was okay but very overpriced..but because of the location i feel they just sit on the laurels when so much more could be achieved..Another case of too many "chiefs" and not enough Indians....

We had a lovely room with sea views and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. The extractor fan in the bathroom did not work but was not an issue. The staff were polite and friendly but did not offer information unless you asked and were not forthcoming with how the basic information you would expect such as when you came down to breakfast in the morning as to what was self-service and what was not. At no point were we offered any information about the cream tea or the the entrance to the Court Gardens which were included in the price.

Warm welcome, friendly staff however our room was very cramped especially as we had our dog with us. It was not cleaned daily which was not a major problem but it would have been useful to know. Breakfast was great but evening menu was unimaginative and limited.

Room was not up to standard. Dog biscuits on floor, bed uncomfortable, pillows pointless, curtains didn't cover windows, could hear guests upstairs clearly, room next to toilets, could hear the flush every time, no sugar in room, food overpriced and average, so may little things but overall a very poor experience.

The food, although enjoyable was overpriced. The cooked breakfast was good but apart from cereal there was no other choice - no yoghurt, almost no fruit, no pastries. The most disappointing was the cream tea that was included in the deal. It was served in a takeaway container with tea in paper cups and resembled dishwater. The scones had obviously just been taken out of the fridge and were cold and hard as was the cream.

Arrived on Saturday afternoon to a bright and sunny Clovelly. Walked down to the hotel with baggage, which took around 7 minutes. Room was basic but clean. Rooms need updating (only one electrical plug/Shower head with gaffer tape holding it up). Clearly there are new managers and they are making efforts but it takes time and a considerable amount of investment. Food was good for evening meal but breakfast needs presentation work as we had bread still in it's bag and it was mouldy. The staff working Sunday morning seemed aggravated when we asked for "poached" eggs instead of the normal fried offering. Overall the village of Clovelly is very pretty but the walk down to the jetty and back up to the Visitor Car Park is not for anyone who is aged or out of physical condition. The "free luggage transport" is no longer available as the man performing this service has retired so that part of the deal needs removing.

Clovelly is a priceless gem of a village and The New Inn is a superb base from which to explore both the village and the surrounding countryside. The New Inn is comfortable, welcoming and staffed with extremely friendly, pleasant people. The room we were allocated was comfortable and reasonably well appointed with an extremely comfortable bed and the restaurant provided excellent food. Breakfast each morning was also of a very high standard. The New Inn is a great place to stay and I recommend it very highly.

Great location, but the room was absolutely tiny, it should only be a single room, not enough room to fit two people in it, one of us had to sit on the bed for the other to walk around! It was also rather grubby, and should have been much cleaner. Breakfast was lovely, but spider webs and dead flies surrounded me!

The building is lovely quaint old inn and we enjoyed our visit as it was such an iconic location. But the tired old building does not excuse the lack of cleanliness, particularly in the breakfast room. Nor the lack of niceties from the staff. Bar food very poor quality and overpriced. But that said, the view from the room and the overall 'olde world' atmosphere compensated in part.

Bit difficult to walk down the cobbled steps from car park to hotel entrance, particularly with cases. No support offered to take luggage back to the car on departure as promised in the advert so that is misleading and was a bit of an inconvenience on the return journey.

Enjoyed our time at The New Inn, lovely friendly staff, especially Rich, John and Molly, rooms comfortable and clean with TV and very comfy bed, always warm with radiators giving out plenty of heat, breakfast was ok with simple full english breakfast but I would recommend their amazingly delicious omelette and you can choose any filling of your choice.
Perfect location and would definitely come here again.

Guests have to be aware that the New Inn Clovelly is located on a steep pebble stone hill with quite a long walk to the carpark. Don't let this put you off, if you are able. A village steeped in character.

Checking in was fine. We were told we had a lovely room and that was true initially but the radiator was not working very well so it was cold. We spoke to reception and were told a new system had been put in and there were glitches. We were given a fan heater instead which definitely helped. The bed was comfy and the room clean. Our shower was pitiful. A very small amount of water came through and it made hair washing impossible. Food in the bar was extortionate so ate at a nearby hotel instead.

The hotel is old and in need of redecoration. It is tired and tatty and could do with a good spring clean. But the staff made our visit, especially the young girl who worked behind the bar. She worked her socks off the 2 nights we were there. She is a credit to your establishment. The breakfast room is very tired and dirty, but again the lady serving breakfast was pleasant and friendly. The food was lovely we ate in the hotel both nights. The second night was busier than the first. Clovelly itself is a quaint fishing village on a very steep hill, it’s certainly not for the faint hearted. The cobblestone streets are tricky to walk in dry, let alone wet!

Very rustic and what you would expect from a very old house. Evening food was ok - average pub food. The place is a bit shabby and run down, but bedroom was clean and view was lovely. Not for those who like a bit of luxury and I would not rate it as 4*.
Breakfast was good and staff friendly, just thin on the ground! Enjoyed it there, but wouldn’t go again.
Other Comments
Not for anyone who wants luxury and the cobble walk in and out of the village is not for the feint hearted!
