Why We Love This Hotel

  • The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is situated in Windermere, two minutes' walk from the train station. Wander into town in 15 minutes to browse local shops and stop by a tearoom.
  • The building was constructed of traditional Lakeland stone in 1865. The fresh interior is balanced with original features—think grand fireplaces and large sash windows.
  • The hotel's restaurant serves traditional British fare, using locally sourced meat and fresh fish from Fleetwood.
  • Bowness-on-Windermere is less than five minutes away by car. Visit the World Of Beatrix Potter attraction or board a lake cruise from Bowness Pier. A short hike up Orrest Head or Queen Adelaide's Hill rewards you with views across the water.
  • Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away in Grasmere. Hill Top is the house Beatrix Potter bought with royalties from her books. This National Trust property is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

We thought it was in a good location in the village, handy for everything. The parking was good. The room was okay, nice and clean but a little bland. The bedding was nice but the bed was a little hard. We really appreciated that we had a large bathroom with both a bath and shower and plenty of hot water. The main thing that let it down for us was the evening meal. I was really looking forward to a fine dining experience. The dining room was nice but the food was disappointing, very average. I had croquettes to start which didn’t feel home made, I had fish and chips, the fish was nice but the chips weren’t nice and the mushy peas felt very dry. The crumble was okay but I think that the apple could possibly have come out of a tin. Breakfast was okay though..

Good small hotel. Very clean and spacious but had a strange smell in the room. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Would definitely eat here again but perhaps not stay. Our fault as we should have asked to change rooms but didn’t.

We were a group of 6 adults and we were all extremely happy with our Lamplighter experience. The rooms, the ambiance, the staff were all really pleasant and helpful and the food was amazing! Breakfast choices were in abundance and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you to James and his team - excellent !
