• The Old Mill is less than 10 minutes' drive from Lymington in the New Forest. This former flour mill has woodland trails and coastal walks on its doorstep.
• The Winning Post is an 18th-century pub just outside Windsor that oozes character. Expect cosy nooks, original stone floors, and an open fire in the snug bar.
• The Running Horse is close to Winchester. It's a great spot from which to explore the cathedral city's Jane Austen connections.
• The White Hart in South Harting is perfectly positioned for strolls in the South Downs. This pretty West Sussex village was home to novelist Anthony Trollope.
• The Hawk Inn has a picture-postcard setting in a pretty Hampshire village. Take in the country pub's stunning views over Pill Hill Brook.
